Yep. I'm embarrassed to say I've never seen this game. I have only started studying Botvinnik recently. I didn't know his scientific nature could be so tactical. 21.Nh4(!!) really? Qf7 (which probably doesn't work), is all I saw. The depth of his attack is broad and deep. |

Right from my first look at the position I knew I'd get much more satisfaction from playing it through than trying to solve it. And so it was .... I sort of guessed R1xc6 and Rxf7 would be played, on aesthetic as much as anything. But no idea how Botvinnik would finish the job. Amazing vision on Botvinnik's part :) |

Black can comfortably reply 17...bxc6 or Nxc6 gaining on the exchange but white maintains the edge. I was surprised by 18. Rxf6 and more by its reply h6. But then 19. Qc4+ looks pretty strong and roots the king from his lair. I was expecting 18. Bb6 xraying the Queen and moving the Rook with a discovered attack. Too slow obviously because 18...Qf6 puts Black in a good defense of the pawn and the knight and his is back in the game while white is down the exchange. Houdini chose the Nxc6 as a better response, by the way. |

White is up a pawn, but his rook is trapped by the bishop on c6, which is also attacking White's queen. So it's pretty clear that White must give up the Exchange for starters. But after that, what? How about another rook? 17. R1xc6! bxc6
Or 17...Nxc6 18. Rxb7 with threats of Qxc6, Ng5 and Qc4 (Qb3). 18. Rxf7!! Kxf7 19. Qc4+ Kg6
Or 19...Ke7 (Kf6) 20. Bg5+, winning the queen; 19...Re6 20. Ng5+; 19...Qd5 20. Ng5+. 20. Qg4+ Kf7
Once again, if 20...Kf6 21. Bg5+ is deadly.
