Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-19-06  InspiredByMorphy: Odd. Black misses mate in one after 45. ...Qd1+?? 45. ...Qf7 would have maintained the advantage.
Jul-15-07  Karpova: The mistake was not 45.Qd1+ but 46....Qxd6??
instead 46...Qh5+ 47.Kg1 Qf7 or 47.Rh3 Qg6 would have lead to 0-1
Nov-30-07  Karpova: This game is a real drama:
First, Marshall obtains an opening advantage but Rubinstein goes on defending marvellously - his defense is really superb! - and reaches a draw. Marshall who's known for his fighting spirit (and Rubinstein lead the match 3.5-1.5) avoids the draw and goes for a risky continuation. And then, in time trouble, Rubinstein throws away a winning position and blunders horribly. In the end, it shouldn't be sufficient for Marshall as the last two games of the match ended in draws.
Mar-23-09  AnalyzeThis: Oh dear, what a blunder.

  al wazir: How does white win after 46...Qh5+ 47. Rh3 Qg6 ?

offramp: Poor Rubinstein had a psychosis that he was followed by a transparent fly, Musca domestica. It was turned into a musca.

Come flub with me. Interesting game despite the final blunder.

Aug-15-22  mayankk06: What was the point of 39 Bxf6 ?

Seems like a speculative sacrifice under time pressure, although I doubt they had 40 move time control back then.

Aug-15-22  drinkfromthecup: With so many pun entries, the song title does not seem to fit this 1908 game. MissScarlett can explain.

Honza Cervenka: <What was the point of 39 Bxf6 ?

It was a speculative sacrifice, and it worked quite well for white. In fact, after 41...Rd8(?) white could win easily with 42.Qh4! There is no good defense against 43.Rf6 with decisive attack.

Aug-15-22  chester the crooner: The first non-stop transatlantic flight was in 1919. The song was written in 1958. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Come_... The song has nothing to do with this game.

Those who read harrylime kibitzing August 11 know this title is a message to a select few power brokers.

MissScarlett: I'll restrict myself to one observation - Sinatra was known by the sobriquet <Chairman of the Board>.
Aug-16-22  drinkfromthecup: Certainly. When members think Marshall - Rubinstein, we think Frank Sinatra, Chairman of the Board. The next time members hear "Come Fly With Me" some will be reminded of the blunder in Marshall - Rubinstein.
Aug-16-22  2071 S Milwaukee: So the pun master abused her privilege to schmooze up to the boss to gain favor, a raise, more power. Sounds so American but she is Italian. As the world turns...

MissScarlett: Sinatra's links with the Mob: https://medium.com/flexible-head/fr...

Of my own alleged dealings with senior Italian-American figures, no comment.

Aug-17-22  Rip2632: Good story. It turned out well for Sinatra. “Saloons are not run by the Christian Brotherhood,” Sinatra hedged in later life.

They were playing something other than chess.

HeMateMe: Marshall wasn't quite in Rubenstein's league, was he?
Aug-28-22  stone free or die: <<HMM> Marshall wasn't quite in Rubenstein's league, was he?>

Well, over the years 1906-1912 Rubinstein was consistenly about 100 EDO points better.

perfidious: Long and short of it is that, in the 1920s, Marshall continued to play well, while Rubinstein lost a step after his annus mirabilis of 1912; Marshall considerably closed the gap in their overall mark then.

Thank you kindly for 'splaining.

Sep-10-22  ndg2: I kinda find this EDO graphs fishy: in the period between 1916 and 1924 didn't lose a single game as we know, but his EDO is constantly declining after 1916: http://www.edochess.ca/top.graphs/g.... Is there a built-in degradation of EDO points, in case you don't play or rarely play?

perfidious: <ndg2>, while I have only rarely looked at EDO, there has to be some sort of penalty for inactivity, same as Chessmetrics clearly penalises it.
