GrahamClayton: This game was played in the New York Chess League, between the New York University team (Bornholz) and the Marshall Chess Club (Marshall).

According to Herman Helms game report in the "Brooklyn Daily Eagle" of February 22, 1923, Bornholz did not make a single error in a game which lasted approximately 6 hours. He avoided possible complications which would have occurred after 23. ♗b4. Marshall won a pawn with 36...♖xb4, but returned it immediately to neutralise White's threat down the a-file. Marshall erred by exchanging pawns with 40...cxd4, leaving a weak pawn which was immediately exploited by Bornholz playing 42. ♗a4, which lead to the gain of the d-pawn a move later. 40...c4 was better. Bornholz was then able to exchange Queens, and advance his K-side pawn majority, which Marshall was powerless to stop.

perfidious: A game which would warm the heart of the hypermodernist: White plays e4 very late and when he finally comes round to the move, it marks the beginning of the final phase.
Feb-20-21  jerseybob: <GrahamClayton: ......40...c4 was better.> Agreed, but even then I think white is at least equal. A game I'm sure Bornholz cherished for the rest of his life.
