kingscrusher: Speelmans 6.cxd4 is statistically weak according to the chesslive.de online database.

Instead perhaps 6.Ng3 is the best and most natural move. But credit to the late Simon Webb for defeating one of the UK's leading GMs.

Apr-03-06  ycensor: That's got to be the most amazing
transposition to a straight Caro
after 8 moves that I've ever seen, but really 6 e5! should have been played. Later 15 Nb3? - putting the knight on a bad square to play a
one move threat? - BAAAAD move, Jon.
Webb played smartly thru-out.

perfidious: This game was played in the 1974 British Championship, held at Clacton.

<kingscrusher> Without wishing to minimise Black's victory, I should point out that in 1974, Speelman had no title, as he didn't make IM till later in the 1970s.

Jul-20-14  kenilworthian: In his Best Games, Speelman suggests 7...Ng5!? was best. He also thought he had a fine game out of the opening.
