An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Very good pun! Interesting game, too, featuring a rare sideline of the Scotch. 7...b6 was still fairly new in 1994, 8...Qg6 remains rare even today, and this is the only game in the DB with 10...d5. Black's Bishop sacrifice did not look impressive to me five remaining brain cells, but even if White could have held the game, the sac looks like a worthwhile gamble in classic Tal fashion.

  perfidious: Droll pun.

<An Englishman....Black's Bishop sacrifice did not look impressive....>

Same here, but once Speelman got two minors for a rook, it was plain sailing.

WannaBe: I'm in the camp of "Huh"??? What is this pun? There are a lot of "Ballads"...

Is this Battle Hymn of the Republic (Early July 4th??) Please teach me what this pun is about.

Jun-29-25  Cecco: <WannaBe>, it refers to the title of the famous song "The ballad of John and Yoko". I agree: great pun.

Jun-29-25  Saniyat24: I got to listen to a great Beatles song...never heard it before...!

  Breunor: Also saying good pun!

I ran computer on the piece sacrifice, computer giving about -0.5. But these computer analyses aren't always relevant for two humans - an attacker in a real game will often induce mistakes. It's a fun, exciting game!
