kingscrusher: Not much counterplay from Black. Yates was a multi-times British championship winner as well.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Much too passive play by Black. After 8.d4, he has to find the right moment to play ...dxc4 and either ...e5 or ...c5. Sultan Khan's most important move might consist of 20.Qg2, preventing 20...c5.
Nov-20-20  Messiah: Good pun. Not an excellent, shining pun, but way more than acceptable. The game is interesting, so I am OK with today's choice.
Nov-20-20  Brenin: Siege warfare at its best.
Nov-20-20  Cheapo by the Dozen: Is there a good Yates game that would match Yeats' most famous phrase: "The Center Cannot Hold"?
Nov-20-20  goodevans: Mir Sultan Khan shows how to dismantle a passive defence.

<34...g6 35.Qg5> would clearly be hopeless so black had no good alternative to sac'ing his N. Once that had gone though there wasn't a single black piece that could come to the aid of its K.

If I'd been black I'd have tried to stop white playing <g5> by getting <...h6> in first. But what do I know? Unlike Mr Yates I'm not a six-time British Champion.

As for the game title, brilliant indeed, the clever reference to snipers at the Battle of Stalingrad is unmistakable, bravo! (sarcasm intended)

Nov-20-20  moodini: 1. This pun is so bad I vomitted and my eyes popped out.

2. A great pun! Bravo! You made my year with your brilliance!

Perhaps we could put this as an automatic comment for each game of the day and save a few people a bit of time.

Nov-20-20  goodevans: In the final position the open h-file will soon lead to mate so I wondered if black had anything better than <35...hxg6>.

But no, <35...fxg6 36.dxe6 gxf6 37.Rd7> and <35...h6 36.gxf7+ Qxf7 37.Bh5 Qf8 38.f7+> are equally hopeless.

Nov-20-20  mrknightly: GM Daniel King has written a book on Khan. Available on Amazon.
Nov-20-20  Atking: Yates was a dangerous opponent but in this game he looks like a boy. Very impressive.

FSR: Yeah, Yates played at about 1600 level in this game. Sad.
