Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-17-08  JonathanJ: seems to be the birth of this variation
Nov-15-15  zydeco: 25.Qb3?? might be the single worst move I've ever seen in a high-level game. White simultaneously leaves two pieces en prise.
Sep-07-16  sfm: Maybe Donner meant to play 25.Qc2, which makes good sense. White must be lost anyway, but thereĀ“s still a fight.
Sep-22-23  Nasruddin Hodja: Donner was probably puffing away, thinking of some florid language to describe how he got an inferior position a pawn down (a series of non-horrible but weak moves starting with the self-pin 11. Ne2) and then shot out the brain burp 25. Qb3?? ...

So it is possible to have posthumous puns. Rest in peace, DD.

Breunor: Wow for a patzer like me it is somewhat comforting to see a GM hand a piece!

Check It Out: Nice to see Dom in the house.

I was looking at Book games recently and kept trying to get "Book ''em, Danno" to work without luck, and here it is.

FSR: Apparently back in 1955 you could play like a moron and still be one of the strongest players on the planet. What an embarrassment. Donner tied for last in the Interzonal.

fredthebear: Aloha! The suave crime stopper Steve McGarrett often said "Book 'em, Danno!" to underling Danny "Danno" Williams when they caught the bad guy.

I must say the image of the Tahitian dancer shakin' it in the opening credits is also emblazed in my mind. That theme song still stops me in my tracks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cpx...

They set plenty of traps, but not much OTB chess on the show.

Sep-22-23  Gouvaneur: A horrible game by Donner, not just due to blundering the piece.

HeMateMe: The game stinks, but saved by the theme song from 5-0.
Sep-22-23  goodevans: Panno's <24...Qb5?> was also a blunder, though less obvious than the ridiculous <25.Qb3??>.

Prior to this, Black had been totally dominant for several moves but putting the Q here gave White the opportunity to take advantage of the d-file pin with <25.Nc3!>. It doesn't actually win anything but the trade of White's otherwise passive N for Black's powerful one would have left White merely a pawn down in an otherwise equal position. Right back in the game, as they say.

Practically any other reasonable looking 24th move by Black would have held onto a huge advantage so Panno got lucky that Donner was playing so horribly.

Stonehenge: The game can be found in several Dutch newspapers. White played 24. Ng1 not Kg1.
Sep-22-23  goodevans: <Stonehenge: ... 24. Ng1 not Kg1.>

The game score has been changed to reflect this and now <25.Qb3?>, though still a bad blunder, no longer looks like <the single worst move ... ever seen in a high-level game> and <24...Qb5> turns out not to be blunder at all.

Somehow the game is less interesting for this correction.
