Actually he (together with Lasker) had already played it against Steinitz (together with Chigorin) a year before this game: Steinitz / Chigorin vs Lasker / Pillsbury, 1896

keypusher: <Plato> You are right! I was going from my memory of a note in Hoffer's London 1899 tournament book, which says after 4....d5-d4:

<This variation was worked out by Pillsbury for the occasion. It is a modification of a consultation game (I forgot this part) played in Russia during the Quadrangular Tournament between Lasker, Pillsbury, Steinitz and Chigorin. Black gives up a pawn subsequently for the attack. >

But it was Steinitz who varied first.

GrahamClayton: This game was probably played in the 22 game simul that Steinitz gave at Vienna in mid-April. He finished with a score of +17, =?, -?.
Sep-09-10  sneaky pete: The usually trustworthy Bachmann gives the date April 11 and the score +17 =3 -2.
