Jun-07-04  mack: Not as quick as his other win in the database, but neat nonetheless...
Jun-07-04  iron maiden: Reminds me why I don't like to play the Alekhine.
Jun-07-04  notsodeepthought: Not playing the Alekhine is a perfectly respectable choice of course, but it's not the Alekhine's fault if black plays ... N8d7? instead of the thematic ...Nc6. I suspect Mayfield would have found a way to lose even with another opening.
Jun-07-04  poktirity: Wren has a nice score =)
Jun-07-04  notsodeepthought: So does Mayfield - indeed, a perfect score, unblemished by victories or even ties.
Sep-14-04  EXIDE: What is the follow up after 7....,Ne5 instead of the 7....,Nf6 that was actually played?
Sep-14-04  ConspTheory06: <EXIDE> After 7...Ne5 then 8. exf7+ now black has two losing lines of play 8...Kxf7 where 9. Bxg6+ wins the queen again or 8...Kd7 where 9.Bf5 forces the king away from the queen with a double check and again the black queen falls.

  tpstar: I think this one is cooked. After 7. e6 Ne5 Black threatens 8 ... Nxd3+ (8. Qh5?? Nxd3+ & 9 ... g6), and if 8. ef+ Nxf7 9. c5 Nd7 holds everything.
Sep-14-04  EXIDE: What about 7...,Ne5 8.exf7+, Nxf7 and not sure but I think 9.Qh5 is the winning move.

  tpstar: 7 ... Ne5 8. ef+ Nxf7 9. Qh5?? Qxd3 holds.
Sep-14-04  masterwojtek: I also couldnt find the winning line after 7...Ne5 which I think "saves" black.
Sep-14-04  crafty: 7...♘e5 8. exf7+ ♘xf7 9. ♘c3 ♗g4 10. f3 ♘e5 11. ♗e4 =   (eval 0.29; depth 12 ply; 750M nodes)
Sep-14-04  Gregor Samsa Mendel: Thus it has been spoken. Kudos to <EXIDE> for being the first to post the refutation. And it took only a little more than 60 years for someone to notice.
Sep-14-04  sandyobrien: of course not 7. ... fxe6, because: 8.Qh5+ g6 9.Bxg6 hxg6 10.Qxg6++

chessgames.com: Just so nobody else wastes any time trying to solve an impossible problem, we'll reset the puzzle of the day to start at move 8.

Easy, yes, but after all it is only Tuesday. We apologize for the oversight.

Sep-14-04  greystar69: Hey, "chessgames" is human, just like the rest of us. I believe this particular theme to steal the queen in this way is called a "Magnus-Smith Trap". Anyone know anything more about the origins of that?
Sep-14-04  clocked: <crafty> should consider more human play, such as, 9.Qc2 (9...g6 10.Nf3 g6 11.0-0)
Sep-14-04  pogo5: <chessgames.com> I have difficulties to accept your apologies. This is not by far the first time a puzzle is cooked. Why do you not check the soundness of the puzzles with your preferred software? and the GM next door if any? ;-)
Sep-14-04  Marvol: <notsodeepthought> Unblemished by victories...? As yet, there is one winning game for Mayfield and a losing (this one). His winning game is a joke, though :-/.
Sep-14-04  ThomYorke: I think even solving easy puzzles we always learn something good!
Sep-14-04  Larsker: The puzzles on cg.com are a daily source of joy and relaxation in my life. I can certainly live with a small error once in a while.
Sep-14-04  sanferrera: Of course 8...Kd7 9. Bf5 (double check) also looses the queen.
Sep-14-04  notsodeepthought: <Marvol> You are right, but as I recall there was only his sterling loss to Wren in the database at the time I made that post. Of course, that changed after Mayfield ran into Trinks (I commented on that on the Trinks page), assuming it's the same Mayfield by the way...
Sep-14-04  Chesspatch: saw the move in t-5 min. yay. but what first struck me as interesting was how the pawn managed to reached e6. alekhine isn't too bad, i played that opening before... but not recommended in blitz
Sep-14-04  kevin86: I am of another opinion:So long as these problems have flaws, the solver then has the "joy of cooking".

The sad part on this theme for black is that the bishop check prevents the king from returning home by Ke8-to protect his queen.

Kudos to another Mayfield,Jeremy-who made the final ten in the NASCAR chase.
