lostemperor: We talked enough about Carlsen, the winner of Corus group C. How about the player at the bottom Ted Barendse (0,5 out of 13). Can you do better than him (of course:-)) Here he could have won against another topplayer of the C group. You can measure your strength with Ted. Suppose you were him, what would you play (as white), at move 26, 27, 30, 33, 35 and 37. Or ask yourself: would you have done the same as Ted at those moves or improve somewhere. Comments coming later.
Feb-02-04  Bitzovich: on move 26. Ng5!? looks most enterprising to me.
On move 30, my vote belongs to 30.Qe5 Qxe6 (only) 31. Rxa8 Qc8 32. Rxc8 On move 33, how about 33. Qe6?
On move 37, i d' go for 37. Ng4+ with chances.

I leave those to be criticized, there might surely be better.

lostemperor: Bitzovich, thanks for your contribution. I wait to comment, so visitors ,who want, can reflect on this game more. After all its an interesting game. Your 30th move is the correct suggestion. Btw I forgot to say that also white's 34th move is worth a thought. Your Qe6 perhaps?

lostemperor: 30 ♕e5 indeed threatens to win (so what should black do instead of 29...♖a8?). Barendse 26th and 27th move is nice, a beautiful concept which leads to a winning position. Your 33. ♕e6 leads only to a perpetual check after 33..♘f1+ and 34...♘g3+. And 37. ♘g4 is not sufficient although it must be said now white has no win anymore.

  lostemperor: <Epilogue of this pretty amazing game> (bear with me now): Against the threat <30> ♕e5 the only move is 29. ... c3 after which 30. ♕e5 ♕xe6 31. ♕xe6 b4 32. ♕e5 c2 33. ♕xb8 ♖xb8 34. ♖e7 h6 35. ♖e8+ ♔h7 36. f8=♕ ♖xe8 37. ♕f5+ ♔h8 38. ♕xc2 would draw.

Back to the game (Ted was already short on time)
<33>♕e5! wins

<35>♕xb5 still wins

<37>♔g2 ♖xf7 38. ♘xf7+ ♔xf7 39. ♕d5+ ♔f6 40. ♕xb5 c3 still offers white something to fight for.

O yeah move <34> ♕e6?! doesn't win because of ...♖xf7 35. ♘xf7 ♔xf7 36. ♕d5+ ♔f6 37. ♕xb5 c3. Ty.
