Dec-27-04 | | aw1988: Honestly, I do not believe it bad. chessgames.com appears to be an honest and decent corperation (if you'd like to call it that) and is not trying to insult or add injury to the tragic incident. Why is it now, that if someone is thinking of the needs of others, it is criticized? I am sure the victims themselves would be pleased to know someone cares. I would. |
Dec-27-04 | | kevin86: A handful of people died in the blizzard-mostly from accidents;there were however many hardships-delayed/cancelled flights, road closures, injuries associated with huge mounds of snow--all on a long Christmas weekend, but not nearly the tragedy caused in the Far East. The real tragedy may be in the bitterness all of this has caused. We don't need to spread it by over analyzing what everyone says about it.
I believe that healing can only take place after we leave the scabs alone. |
Dec-27-04 | | Kajtek: I agree with several other kibitzers here: this pun is tasteless. You don't show sympathy through bad jokes. |
Dec-27-04 | | loftus: <The real tragedy may be in the bitterness all of this has caused. We don't need to spread it by over analyzing what everyone says about it.> Well said, <kevin86> (although the "real tradgedy" is still the catastrophe itself). To bring the discussion back to chess for a minute, does anyone have any comments on 8. g4? I've seen such a gambit in other games, where white gives a pawn to open the g-file. Is that the main idea? It looks sound, especially when you see it come to fruition in this particular game. Maybe that's all there is to say about it, I was just looking for other people's experience with such a move. |
Dec-27-04 | | Dillinger: I personally (see above) had trouble believing a pun could be used as a means of sympathizing (rather than trivializing). May I suggest a game by Sri Lanka's favorite chess son, author of 'Best Lessons of a Chess Coach', former NY state champion, and apparently Nakamura's stepfather (?) Sunil Weeramantry as a more sober tribute? The following rather swashbuckling game might be a good choice: Weeramantry vs V Pupols, 2001 |
Dec-27-04 | | acirce: <aw1988> That was a weird post. chessgames.com are not bad people, THAT is where intention comes in. That is however obviously not what is criticized. If intention is all that counts, I don't know why you were so upset about Chessbase's "Twin Towers" joke. |
Dec-27-04 | | aw1988: First off, I'm really not sure that was meant with good intention. But at least chessgames has publically announced that it is symbolism for what happened and they are sad about it. Chessbase never published that they had good intentions about it. And even so, in that case, they were heavily leaning towards Kerry, being bias. Two rather different situations. |
Dec-27-04 | | Castle In The Sky: Puns, in and of themselves, are always tasteless to some degree. However, oftentimes, they are tasteless, non-insulting, and funny: "Tis the Szen" from a few days ago is a good example. However, there are some tragedies which are so tragic that little humor, if any, is ever appropriate. Natural disasters which kill thousands of people fit within this category. It seems ludicrous for Chessgames.com to defend its pun that it expresses sympathy that the victims are "on our mind." A simple apology for crossing the line would be far more fitting. |
Dec-27-04 | | aw1988: Nevertheless, maybe chessgames should just choose a new game of the day, and other members can ponder these kibitzes under "recent kibitzing". Like kevin86 said, the REAL tragedy is all the bitterness. |
Dec-27-04 | | KampongBoy: Hmmm, despite the best intentions of the posters, this was in poor taste. If terrorists struck at the centre of London, England, and killed over 22,000 people, would we have a game by Lundin, and the pun "Lundin Bridge is falling down?" Could this possibly be construed as not being in bad taste, but showing support for the victims and their families? Best to leave serious matters out of it or we could envisage a plethora of bad puns connected with such tragedies as Pearl Harbour, The World Trade Center attacks, the dropping of the Atom Bomb on Hiroshima, and the Holocaust. |
Dec-27-04 | | northernsoul: <aw1988> the real tragedy is not the dispute that has arisen because of a misguided attempt at humour - the real tragedy is the death of thousands in Malaysia, India and so on. |
Dec-27-04 | | aw1988: Obviously, but I am trying to adress (I never could spell that properly) the situation on this page that the pun is not being appropriate. Naturally the real tragedy is the actual situation at hand, but we are disregarding this, as it is obvious. |
Dec-27-04 | | SnipingBishop: Yes. This is a very tragic event - one of the worst ever in modern human history. However, this is a chess site and although i agree that this catastrophe maybe too sensitive for a pun, let's get back to the game and drop the discussion about the pun coz its like putting petrol onto fire. I love fianchettoed bishops and seeing it getting terminated straight after it reached its position is quite sad - lol i nearly got a heart attack ;)
This game demonstrates that one should be well prepared for each opening and should not just unleash his/her favourite beloved opening for every situation. It is better to contemplate first and try to find out the strength and weakness of the opponent's setup. |
Dec-27-04 | | Dillinger: <This game demonstrates that one should be well prepared for each opening and should not just unleash his/her favourite beloved opening for every situation.> That's exactly what I said the first time this game was used :) |

 | | chessgames.com: I think the problem with our choice of titles is that people come to the site expecting our daily pun to bring a small laugh, and today's reference is no laughing matter. I doubt anybody thinks that we had malicious intentions, but perhaps it was a mistake to try to combine current events into the game of the day. And so, we're not going to retract this as a game of the day, but we'll take this incident into consideration in the future. Thank you. |

Dec-27-04 | | Chathurang1: Whike this comment is in bad taste, i dont think it is evil, as i had 20 family members die in india. had this comment been posted a week earlier, it would not have been taken like this. This is just my comment. Maybe a comment of a 13 year old like me doesnt matter |
Dec-27-04 | | Andrew Chapman: Very sorry to hear about your tragedy, Chathurang. Our sympathies are with you and especially since you are so young. |
Dec-27-04 | | Ultra: Mountain vs. Molehill.
Decide for yourself.
<rolleyes> |
Dec-28-04 | | DanielBryant: I think the intentions were noble, but I can see how it could have come across as it did, especially to someone like <Chathurang>. By the way, my thoughts are with you and your family as well. |
Dec-28-04 | | aw1988: <Chathurang1> Any opinion is accepted, as long as it does not violate the posting guidelines. My sympathies for you and your family/friends. |
Dec-28-04 | | kevin86: My meaning of defining the "real Tragedy" is itself a form of humor.OF course, the real tragedy is the massive numbers of people who traveled to a resort area near the water--only to have the water take over the whole area. Forty thousand people and the number will rise. It just looks funny and almost cartoonish that suddenly the water would overrun everything--just as it would when a coyote falls from a 10,000 foot cliff in a Roadrunner Cartoon. Again,my prayers are with all concerned. |
Dec-28-04 | | aw1988: <kevin86> It has gotten worse. Death toll now at 50,000. Truly, horrifying... |
Dec-28-04 | | SnipingBishop: Far out. Italian officials have said that they estimate the number will soon exceed 10,000!!! Man, its like the stuff that people see on movies except its real :| |
Dec-28-04 | | notsodeepthought: I assume you mean 100,000, though estimates vary widely (e.g., CNN puts the death toll around 56,000). Sadly, though, regardless of the source, the numbers are being constantly revised upward, so a projection of 100,000+ may not be unrealistic at this point. |
