al wazir: What "Dobias sacrifice"? *Reti* gave up an exchange in the opening. But it looks like a blunder, not a sac.
May-28-20  jith1207: Not a game Reti would like to see on his birthday?
May-28-20  sfm: <al wazir: What "Dobias sacrifice"...> Right, pun doesn't work when Dobias wins.

Honza Cervenka: Interesting game. Reti was clearly outplayed in the opening, and his "sac" of exchange was utterly forced. But in lost position he managed to resist quite stubbornly for a long time and in the end he had a draw in his grasp just to blunder it away with 79.Bxb6?? instead of 79.Ke2! Bc3 (or 79...Bg3 80.Bxb6 and it is already black who must fight for draw) 80.Bxh4 =.
May-28-20  Predrag3141: Black's last chance to win, before 79 Bxb6?, was probably 74… Ke5. The bishop on g3 guards the queening square, b8, so the sacrifices … b5 and … a4 could be contemplated.

Stockfish gives 74...Ke5 75.Kd3 Kd5 76.Bd2 Bc7 77.Bg5 b5 78.axb5 a4 79.bxa4 c4+ with a paw race in which both sides queen on move 90. Still not an easy win, but Black has good chances.

After missing 74 … Ke5, Black was preoccupied holding his queenside together and could not push his c- and d-pawns in the foreseeable future.

OhioChessFan: <Of course> I thought of using a Dobias loss. But then it would have been, "Oh, that wasn't a dubious sacrifice. It was just a bad move." I thought there would be some amusement value in a dubious/Dobias sac winning. I didn't count on the literal asessment.
May-29-20  jith1207: Your Puns are being deemed Dobias, <OCF>.

They're out there to get ya!
