Jan-12-06  Akavall: I totally missed this one, I was looking for some kind of back rank mate, but found nothing.
Jan-12-06  shaikh123: 16.Bxc6 was a key move to make way for
Rd8+.
Jan-12-06  erimiro1: If: 16.-Q:c6 17 Q:e5 and now not Q:c4? 18.Rc1. 17.-f4 looks best alternative for black. For another pawn he is opening the diagonal for the bishop and can develop what seems to be counter chances, but white has nothing to worry about. White can consider even 17.Nf7+ Kg8 18. N:e5 that also doesn't leave many hopes for black.
Jan-12-06  The17thPawn: Holy crap I got a Friday. Must be all the spoon feeding I've been getting from <Gypsy>' <Patzer2> & <Calli> finally taking affect. Love Larsen's style, the man definitely played to win no matter who he was facing and you gotta admire that.
Jan-12-06  Akavall: <Holy crap I got a Friday> It's Thursday...
Jan-12-06  notyetagm: I saw the line played in the game but I didn't see why Black couldn't play 16 ... ♕xc6.
Jan-12-06  The17thPawn: Well than that explains my success. Thanks <Akvall> for setting me straight. I may have to include you as a patron as well.
Jan-12-06  Akavall: <The17thPawn> At least you got the puzzle right :).

al wazir: What kind of puzzle is this? White wins a lousy pawn (and it's not even clear that he can hold it if black plays 16...Qxc6) and twenty moves later black loses the end game. Where's the thud and blunder? Where's the queen sac or the win of a queen that we're accustomed to getting? I want to see blood, not catsup!
Jan-12-06  Marius: yes, one time i ask chessgames.com if a game could be a puzzle of the day and they aswered me that the win of a pawn was not enough for a puzzle...

But I liked these kind of puzzle like the other where we can "see blood" because it could be less evident

Jan-12-06  abstraction: <notyetagm: I saw the line played in the game but I didn't see why Black couldn't play 16 ... Qxc6.> Maybe because 17. Nf7+ Kg8 (not Rxf7 because of Rdd8+), 18. Nxe5
Jan-12-06  EXIDE: I did not get this one. White is one pawn up, does that guarantee victory?
Jan-12-06  mrjoshherman: why not 16. Nf7+ Rxf7 17. Bxc6 bc 18. Qxe5 ? Seems like he can't refuse the rook capture or else its discovered check attack on the queen...
Jan-12-06  HillGentleman: Black's queenside was ruined, and the developed white rooks quickly infiltrated it. (If 16....Qxc6; 17Qxe5 - if now 17... Qxc7; 18 Qe7 winning a piece).
Jan-12-06  erimiro1: <al wazir>You are not serious. I know it.
Jan-12-06  HillGentleman: mrjoshherman, are you giving up a knight and a queen?
Jan-12-06  mrjoshherman: no, if he captures the Queen, then Rd8 is checkmate. Remember, the black rook is on f7.
Jan-12-06  TheRedHeadedLeague: Sometimes you can just SMELL a combination--the forking possibilities with the undeveloped back rank.
Jan-12-06  marcwordsmith: mrjosherman, I think in your line, 18. . . Be6 leaves Black a piece up.
Jan-12-06  aroyni: I am analysing this game with both Fritz9 and Shredder8 on a 13 and 15 ply shoot out, obviously bXc6 loses, but Qxc6 is not obvious. White is a bit better but nothing conclusive. I will post the final results when the shootout is over.
Jan-12-06  aroyni: Fritz9 Depth = 13 1/2-1/2, after more than 60 moves, so black can hold...
Jan-12-06  blingice: This is an interesting puzzle because normally the move is A. a sac, and B. a sac that can only be taken by one piece. This sac can be taken by two. I considered a smothered mate type line, and tried some of the other sacrifices that are actually in the game.
Jan-12-06  prinsallan: I was on the right track today, but couldn't see the whole line. I saw the threat of the backrank mate and the way to gain a pawn.
Jan-12-06  DanielBryant: Robert Schinkmann got this one faster than I did.

LIFE Master AJ: A good puzzle based on a deflection and the weakness of Black's back-rank.

However, its only aim was to win a pawn and was a little too easy for a Thursday.
