Sep-19-22  get Reti: I actually first saw the longer mate of 27. Rb8+ Kd7 28. Rxd5+ cxd5 29. Qxd5+ Ke7 30. Rb7+ followed by mate in a few moves. But then I knew that Mondays should be easier than that, and saw the move from the game.
Sep-19-22  jes47: that's pretty. but just as deadly (and a bit slower) is 27 Rb8 Kd7 28 Rxd6+ etc. When I find a clear win I stop looking.
Sep-19-22  jrredfield: The exact same thing happened to me as for <get Reti>. 27.Rb8+ is mate in 7.
Sep-19-22  Brenin: Deflect the N with 27 Qb8+ Nxb8 28 Rc7 mate. The very pretty mating combination starts with 21 Bxc6, which would make a good POTD for later in the week. Black seemed go downhill after the passive 9 ... c6, when Nf6 would have been safer.
Sep-19-22  mayankk06: I also solved it via 27 Rb8+ Kd7 28 Rxd5+ cxd5 29 Qxd5+ Ke8 30 Qxd8#

27 Qb8+ Nxb8 29 Rc7# is very pretty. Wish I could have spotted it. The shoulder mate pattern is one of the harder ones to visualize.

Sep-19-22  jes47: Knight13: Stockfish calls it a win for white before 18 ... Nc2. There are a number of black moves that Stockfish does not like, but after 9 ... c6 black's game never recovers. Stockfish recommends 9... Nf6. White isn't faultless either: 12 Nc3 leads to a cleaner faster win. But you are right, 18.... Nc2 is also a blunder.
Sep-19-22  mayankk06: White must be a strong believer in chess aesthetics to spurn the much simpler 26 Rxd5+ win and instead force the King back to c8 via 26 Rb7+ and deliver mate at c7 after a Queen sac.

takebackok: Took a second or two, to find the old queen sack Monday!
Sep-19-22  Gregor Samsa Mendel: Queen sacrifice Monday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ta...
Sep-19-22  nalinw: <mayankk06> How is 26 Rxd5+ "much simpler" than a mate in 3?
Sep-19-22  Cheapo by the Dozen: I struggled with this one, as Mondays go, because Rb8+ looked as if it SHOULD work.
Sep-19-22  areknames: Took me a really long time to spot the pretty 27.Qb8+ but eventually I did. Nice.

<because Rb8+ looked as if it SHOULD work.>

Hehe, I know!

Sep-19-22  agb2002: White is one knight down.

Black threatens Kxb7.

The knight protects c7. Hence, 27.Qb8+ Nxb8 28.Rc7#.

A bit longer is 27.Rb8+ Kd7 (27... Nxb8 28.Qc7#) 28.Rxd5+ cxd5 29.Qxd5+ Ke7 (29... Ke8 30.Qxd8#) 30.Rb7+ and mate in three with Qxf7#.

Sep-19-22  boringplayer: I went with 27.Rb8+, when Black is not obliged to. play into the mate on c7. White may well be winning here anyway, but I'm beginning to think I should take up Bingo
Sep-19-22  saturn2: Epaulet
Sep-19-22  mel gibson: Typical Monday - sac the Queen. LOL

FSR: Very sweet. Took me a minute.
Sep-19-22  TheaN: Yay I got an instant Monday again for once. I opened the main page, saw the queen check and rook check after, and that was actually it: <27.Qb8+ Nxb8 28.Rc7#>. Very appealing pattern.
Sep-19-22  TheaN: <mayankk06: White must be a strong believer in chess aesthetics to spurn the much simpler 26 Rxd5+ win and instead force the King back to c8 via 26 Rb7+ and deliver mate at c7 after a Queen sac.>

Patzer sees mate, patzer plays mate? But in this case, the saying doesn't claim anything, it's just the right thing to do. Rb7+ #2, Rxd5+ #5, so what did White do wrong exactly?

  chrisowen: I quantum it's melon Qb8+ and oblivion job duh it's axios jug it's each Qb8+ duck;
Sep-19-22  johnnydeep: Eventually saw the queen sac, after trying to get 27.Qf5+ to work (it doesn't). But I didn't even consider the already mentioned 27.Rb8+ Kd7 28.Rb7+ Kc8 29.Qb8+ Nxb8 30.Rc7#
Sep-19-22  takchess: Doink ( the sound of my head hitting the desk ). Damn it is not RB8. That wrinkle sort of moved it to a Tuesday/Wednesday problem. A Nice one.

steinitzfan: Not all two-movers are created equal. This queen sac combines deflection and obstruction themes. I got the Rb8 line though. I knew it wasn't a Monday solution.

perfidious: A different kind of 'very easy' method sees White home in this one.

Eggman: I missed it! Given the highly appealing 1.Rb8+, I can only reach one conclusion: the Einstellung Effect strikes again!
