Nov-26-12  morfishine: <25.Qxf8+ Kxf8 26.Rd8+> Very nice pattern that was somewhat camoflauged by Black's Knight (at least for me)
Nov-26-12  bachbeet: Sorry, forgot about the knight interposing.
Nov-26-12  The Last Straw: Pretty easy:
25.♕xf8+! ♔xf8
26.♖d8#

Similar to the mate that looks like this:

Nov-26-12  Caissas Clown: Even easier than other Mondays , due to the proximity of Her Majesty to the piece for which she gives her life.
Nov-26-12  prbprb2: I guess Black must trade rooks on move 21; taking the pawn is a disaster. Black must accept being a pawn down. Any thoughts?
Nov-26-12  zb2cr: 25. Qxf8+, Kxf8; 26. Rd8#. Is chess a simple game when you are presented with a position and told there is a decisive, "very easy" win hidden in the position? Yes!
Nov-26-12  Once: You have to feel a little bit sorry for knights. They can't make the big sweeping across-the-whole-board moves that the other major pieces can. Nor can they make the tiny precise single steps that every other piece can do.

In today's final position ...

... the black Ne7 can't interpose on e8 or capture on d8, even though it is standing just one square away.

Nov-26-12  Abdel Irada: <<•>Murder by spectator<•>>

"If only," Black must have been thinking, "I'd had time to get my knight to d5."

As the game really went, the knight is not merely impotent as a defender; its presence as a functional spectator on e7 actually sounds the death knell by blocking the queen's defense of f8. This allows mate in two:

<<•>25. Qxf8†, Kxf8

26. Rd8#>.

Nov-26-12  sfm: My computer (just behind my eyes) objects to
19.-,d3?
20.-,Rd4?
21.-,Rxc4??
Nov-26-12  whiteshark: Solved it even w/o my Monday morning coffee (when life actually restarts).
Nov-26-12  Abdel Irada: Fragouli is clearly not a strong player — or at least wasn't playing like one here. White had numerous ways to win after 21. ...Rxc4?, although I'm pleased to see that Karahaliou picked the most efficient of them.
Nov-26-12  Oxspawn: Yes it is very easy. Very, very easy. What is interesting about the final position it is how much fire power black has pointing in the wrong direction and unable to defend. Damn the knight for getting in the way, blast the laws of chess for not allowing black two moves in a row. I'ver been away. Got thrashed on a plane by the programme on my phone. Felt very Fragouli.
Nov-26-12  Abdel Irada: <Oxspawn: Felt very Fragouli.>

Maybe we need a new word: fragoulity.

Nov-26-12  francis2012: Kekekekekeke 1. ♕xf8!+ ♔xf8 2.♖d8+#
Nov-26-12  Bengambit: 25.Qxf8+ should do the job...
Nov-26-12  Patriot: 25.Qxf8+ Kxf8 26.Rd8#

Move 21...Rxc4 seemed to be what went wrong. But really I'm not so sure black had anything good. 21...Rxd3 22.Qxd3 and white threatens 23.Qd6 or 23.Qd7.

Nov-26-12  sushijunkie: Snore. Thank nature this was this easy. I wasn't going to eat until I got it right, and I'm damn hungry!
Nov-26-12  Robin Gitte: 25. ♕xf8+ ♔xf8 ▢ 26. ♖d8#

My first POTD solution post. CG have found my level at last. Good start to the week.

OhioChessFan: Theme is the weak back rank. Give up anything/everything so long as you have a major piece left to deliver the mate.

Odd that it took White 9 moves to battle her way all the way to the fourth rank.

Nov-26-12  agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop and a knight.

Black threatens 25... Rc2 and 26... Qxf2+.

The only real defender of the black king is the bishop on f8. Hence, 25.Qxf8+ Kxf8 26.Rd8#.
