Domdaniel: Oof! Kennefick was particularly efficient at winning quick tactical battles against somewhat weaker opponents. In this Olympiad he had two wins as Black in 14 moves.

I played him a few months later and almost suffered the same fate, but I somehow turned the tables.

FSR: The game <Domdaniel> mentioned was the remarkable four-queens slugfest G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977. Sadly, the two players died less than two weeks apart.

  fredthebear: A neat knight roller.

11.QxNc3 would fall to the fork of the other Nb2.

HeMateMe: I think it's a Steve Miller reference.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Specifically, "The Joker," one of Steve Miller's bigger hits. But still can't figure out how the game title is supposed to work.

HeMateMe: "Maurice" is mentioned in the song.

perfidious: <FSR> had to wait a mere three years to see this enshrined in immortality.

While the lyric in <The Joker> speaks of the prophetess of love, I too am at a loss to explain 'pompatus'.

HeMateMe: Well, let's not get too pedantic with this stuff. This isn't the national spelling bee.

♫♪♫ Some people call me Mau-rice 'cause I speak of the Pompatus of Love ♫♪♫

Black is Maurice Kennefick.

Nope. The Joker

<is one of two Steve Miller Band songs that feature the nonce word "pompatus". The first line of the lyrics is a reference to the song "Space Cowboy" from Miller's Brave New World album. The following lines refer to two other songs: "Gangster of Love" from Sailor and "Enter Maurice" from Recall the Beginning...A Journey from Eden. The line "some people call me Maurice / 'Cause I speak of the pompatus of love" was written after Miller heard the song "The Letter" by the Medallions. In "The Letter", writer Vernon Green made up the word puppetutes, meaning a paper-doll erotic fantasy figure; however, Miller misheard the word and wrote pompatus instead.> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_J...

perfidious: While that is the word, I have a source which lists the spelling as 'pompitous' in both instances:

Sep-12-24  areknames: The pun is still beyond me but I suppose that's my problem. The game is obviously crap, although it would be nice to be from the BVI and get to play in the Olympics. I have been to Tortola and it's a lovely place.

perfidious: Maybe one day, I will play on the EPT in Kyrenia or Monte Carlo and wind up there for good and all, but my chances of making the Monacan team would be about nil, while I would be ranked third for the Cypriot side.
Sep-12-24  areknames: <perf>, just go for Cyprus! That's what I would do if I could.

FSR: 12...Nb1+ would have mated similarly, but been more picturesque IMO. Extremely unusual to see black knights on a2 and b1 like that.
