Shades of Reti vs Tartakower, 1910!

  al wazir: OK, I'll bite. 28. Kd2 Bb4+ 29. Ke2. Now what?

If 29...Bxf3+ 30. gxf3 Bxe1 31. Kxe1, black is a ♙ up. Granted, after 31...Rc2 32. Rb1 d3, white is in pretty dire straits, but why not make black work for the win?

Jul-11-09  jokerman: al wazir => 28. Kd2 and Rc2 mate.
Jul-11-09  MostlyAverageJoe: The title pun reminded me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxh5...

Enjoy!

Jul-11-09  backrank: I don't understand the pun here, but the finish is stunning.

Queen sac followed by a double discovered check - a frequently recurring combination motif.

Here it leads to two particularly lovely mating patterns:

I 28. ♔c2 ♖c2#

II 28. ♔b3 ♗c2#

Some kind of echo: In the 1st variation the rook mates supported by the bishop, while in the 2nd variation the bishop delivers mate on the same square, now supported by the rook! A perfect team.

Jul-11-09  Gilmoy: <backrank: Some kind of echo: ...> Sure, that always follows from a double-check. Both checking pieces can go to the King's square next move, by definition of check.
Jul-11-09  UnsoundHero: This game reminded me of the anonymous game 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 dxe4 4 Nxe4 Nf6 5 Qd3 e5? 6 dxe5 Qa5+ 7 Bd2 Qxe5 8 0-0-0 Nxe4? 9 Qd8+! Kxd8 10 Bg5+, and mate with either Rd8 or Bd8.
Jul-11-09  backrank: <Gilmoy> You're right, that's the logical explanation (which I had missed)! However, in many cases, only one of those possibilities is actually used, see e.g. Maczuski vs Kolisch, 1864

<UnsoundHero> The game you mention is in fact the Réti-Tartakower game cited by Phony Benoni!

Jul-11-09  whiteshark: You can't say you didn't see it coming, can you?
Jul-11-09  randomsac: Somewhat surprising white didn't see it coming, but maybe he was low on time or something.
Jul-11-09  Chess4Life99: I loved how black played so defensively until the last like five moves when he won.
Jul-11-09  backrank: <Chess4Life99> Interesting observation. True, it's surprising how quickly Black switched from defensive to mating attack. White must have been very bewildered at what happened to him.

Thanks, <MAJ>. I watched the video, and my older daughter just wandered away, muttering "Why are you so weird, Daddy?"

If my younger daughter had said it, I would be <really> worried ;>)

Jul-11-09  A.G. Argent: Cheers, <M.A. Joe>, very funny. Gonna send that to some Seattle chums.
Jul-11-09  nevski: The pun is completely adequate.A ferocious, tenacious and beautiful fight!
Jul-11-09  Googleandchess45: I was a Nirvana fan back in the day, never thought it would be associated with chess though. Nice pun, great game.
Jul-11-09  kevin86: This is yet another brilliant variation of the Reti-Tartakower theme. This time, the play is on the second rank.

Black will mate after:

28 ♔d2 ♖c2# or

28 ♔b3 ♗c2#

A crossfire mate with bishops or with rook and bishop-take your choice Mr. Parma-a cheesy one at best.

Jul-11-09  jeeky1996: The pun is from the title of the last episode of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Series : "Smells like Team Spirit"

Super lol

Jul-11-09  goodevans: <Chess4Life99: I loved how black played so defensively until the last like five moves when he won.>

Although the finish was very nice indeed, I wasn't impressed by black's play prior to ... 0-0-0. I think if white had been a little more wary then he could probably have enjoyed a comfortable middle game.

Jul-11-09  WhiteRook48: white should have played 25 Qd2!!
or 7. f4!!
Jul-11-09  just a kid: A pun that I actually get!
Nirvana is a good band.Too bad the singer killed himself.
Jul-11-09  dzechiel: When I was playing through this game, I strongly wanted to play

20 Bxd5 Bxd5 21 Nxd5 exd5 22 Re1+ Kd8 (or 22...Kd7) 23 Qe4

with a lot of pull for the sacrificed bishop. Black must have better responses.

Jul-11-09  goodevans: <dzechiel: When I was playing through this game, I strongly wanted to play 20 Bxd5 Bxd5 21 Nxd5>

Nice idea, and possibly what white had in mind when playing 19 Be4. Perhaps he was worried about 20 ... 0-0-0.

Jul-11-09  goodevans: <WhiteRook48: white should have played 25 Qd2 ...>

More to the point, in my opinion he shouldn't have played Rg7 so soon. This weakened the fourth rank at a critical moment.

Jul-11-09  newzild: Black gets a position similar to those in the poisoned pawn variation of the Sicilian Najdorf - except he doesn't have an extra pawn.
