 | | chessgames.com: That's all for today! Come back tomorrow at the same time (7:30am EST) for round #8. |
Jan-19-08 | | WBP: The official site just posted a draw here. |
Jan-19-08 | | Eyal: <Ulhumbrus: <Eyal: <<Ulhumbrus: h5 was also played already at move 50 in this variation 50...Rd3 51 Ba8 gxh5 52 Rxh5 may win> It doesn't matter that h5 was played - I said 51...Rd2+ after Ba8, not gxh5.>> 51...Rd2+ 52 Kh3 gxh5 53 Rxh5 may win> But 52...Nf7! is a pretty win for Black. |
Jan-19-08 | | Geronimo: A good solid game - no fireworks though and Carlsen gets his half-point. Good night all y'all from Congo. |
Jan-19-08 | | talisman: tanks CG. good ballgame. |
Jan-19-08 | | Ulhumbrus: <Eyal: <Ulhumbrus: <Eyal: <<Ulhumbrus: h5 was also played already at move 50 in this variation 50...Rd3 51 Ba8 gxh5 52 Rxh5 may win> It doesn't matter that h5 was played - I said 51...Rd2+ after Ba8, not gxh5.>> 51...Rd2+ 52 Kh3 gxh5 53 Rxh5 may win> But 52...Nf7! is a pretty win for Black.> 53 f4 gxh5 54 Rxh5 may win. |
Jan-19-08 | | talisman: that should've been thanks. |
Jan-19-08 | | acirce: And Carlsen stays in sole lead. Very nice. |

Jan-19-08 | | Knight13: Topalov always a pawn down.
Jan-19-08
 | | TheAlchemist: <R+B v R> The Endgame explorer (Endgame Explorer) has a 40% winning percentage for R+B, which is quite a lot, considering it should be drawn. It's not so easy to defend, especially if you're short on time. |

 | | chancho: I wonder, had Kramnik had Toppy's position, would he have converted it to the full point!? |
Jan-19-08 | | ganstaman: <Eyal: <ganstaman: in some situations (R+B v. R perhaps), the 50-move rule is lifted so that the players can attempt to achieve the result that the ending would otherwise have.>
It used to be that way in certain periods, but not anymore - see Karjakin vs Shirov, 2007.

Thanks, I had not read all that follow-up discussion before, seeing only a response or two before I never went back to that page. |

Jan-19-08 | | Ulhumbrus: <Eyal: <Ulhumbrus: <Eyal: <Ulhumbrus: <Eyal: <Ulhumbrus: h5 was also played already at move 50 in this variation 50...Rd3 51 Ba8 gxh5 52 Rxh5 may win> It doesn't matter that h5 was played - I said 51...Rd2+ after Ba8, not gxh5.> 51...Rd2+ 52 Kh3 gxh5 53 Rxh5 may win> But 52...Nf7! is a pretty win for Black.> 53 f4 gxh5 54 Rxh5 may win.> You keep insisting on gxh5 but there are constantly much better moves for Black... 53...g5 is a killer in this line.> I don't "insist" on gxh5 at any one point after you propose an alternative at that one point. If Black has something better at that point, the move gxh5 may get delayed and so get played at a different point. In view of the move 53...g5, an earlier f4 may be better for White eg 47..Kf8 48 f4 or 47...Kf8 49 Rxh7 Ne5 50 Bd5 Rxa3 51 f4 Ng4 52 h5. Another interesting idea is 47...Kf8 48 Rxh7 Ne5 49 Bd5 Rxa3 50 h5 Rd3 51 Be6 eg 51...Rxf3 52 h6 threatening Ra7 and h7 or 51...Nxf3 52 h6 threatening Ra7 and h7 |
Jan-19-08 | | Confuse: <chancho> thats a good point, considering kramnik vs aronian last round! |

Jan-19-08 | | TheBB: Carlsen said in a video about the game, that when Topalov gave up the a-pawn, he thought he was playing for a loss... but then realized he was about to get mated. lol! |
Jan-20-08 | | suenteus po 147: Kid Carlsen is good. Better than that, he's great! I thought for sure the Topalov comeback would steamroll the young Norwegian GM, but I was wrong. Carlsen may just win this whole ball of wax! |
Jan-20-08 | | Eyal: Carlsen's summary of the game: <He was better, but - I guess - not much.> (http://www.chessvibes.com/coverstor...) |
Jan-20-08 | | whiteshark: "Veselin Topalov declined Magnus Carlsen’s invitation to play against the Marshall attack, and so a quiet Spanish was the order of the day. Black played very dynamically, but never managed to equalize. On move 26, Topalov should have tried 26.Bg5!,(see diagram) click for larger view since after 26...Bxf2+ 29.Kf1! Rc6 30.Rac1! is close to winning for white, and Magnus would have had a tough defensive task coming. Even the endgame where white’s bishop was better than black knight wasn’t an easy task, but the Norwegian’s active defense brought him his share of the point." from Corus Report of round 7 |
Jan-20-08 | | whiteshark: Imo after <26.Bg5 h6 27.Bh4 Rc6> black is o.k. |
Jan-20-08 | | Eyal: The diagram position above results from Bg5 on move 27, not 26. The line 26...Bxf2+ 27.Kf1! Rc6 28.Rac1! given in the official site actually starts from the following position: click for larger viewBut Black isn't forced to play 26...Bxf2+; instead, 26...Kg7 seems to be holding. |
