Oct-11-10  Patriot: It was easy seeing that 20.Qg8+ Rxg8 21.Nf7#.

But for those wondering what black should have done instead of 17...c6, how about 10...Resigns? 9...fxe6?? is the easiest way to lose a piece. Black's position looks horribly restricted and likely lost. He had to try something like 9...Nde5 or even 9...Nb6.

However it does say "Training Tournament", so was it just a demonstration?

Oct-11-10  gars: To LIFE Master AJ:

Would you please point me an analysis of Portisch vs Torre, Rio de janeiro,Interzonal, 1979?

Thank you very much.

Oct-11-10  5hrsolver: yes, another smothered mate theme. Another exercise I do everyday is to play the game of the day and then try to find what and when the critical winning move is played. Like trying to guess when it becomes a puzzle.
Oct-11-10  turbo231: <Once: They gathered for the feast. They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can't kill the beast>

Hotel California by The Eagles. Love the song, love The Eagles, love mothered mates. I'm just a loving person.

You guys need to lighten up. What part of Very Easy don't you understand? We have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday puzzles for geniuses like you.

Oct-11-10  kevin86: To chess players-even a four move mate could have been a Monday puzzle. Anytime there is a knight near f7 and the king in the corner,a smothered mate may be in the works.

Delivering a real smothered mate,as in this game,is like pitching a no-hitter.

--- On the subject of minatures-a minature game is 25 moves or less;a minature puzzle is seven pieces or less.

Oct-11-10  dzechiel: <kevin86: ... On the subject of miniatures-a miniature game is 25 moves or less>

Everyone has weighed in with a definition of a "chess miniature", so I might as well also. I have always thought a chess miniature was <= 24 moves. I *THINK* I got this definition from Chernev, perhaps in "1000 Best Short Games of Chess" (1955) or possibly "The Fireside Book of Chess" (1949). I'll take a look this evening and see if I can find the exact reference. If I do, I'm guessing that it will predate any others.

Oct-11-10  AuN1: nice; the old smothered mate.

Bane angel Modern e4 Bc4 strong weapon tracking light squares e6! Smothered mate entertain us, in effect it curt finish like turpentine glossing over.

Dragon bishop caught in the middle fiddles Nf7+. One ate tracking hard, kh8 lemme thrash paper book horses windmill motor treasure h6+ start.

Oct-11-10  rafranklin: Seeing this reminds me of how happy I was as a youngster, when I saw and played my first combination. A very simple tactic it was, but it was more than I would have seen a few weeks prior to the event.

Neuroscience has much to say about what lights up in the brain when we solve a problem, and how the event of the resulting happiness would show up on a brain scan. So it would seem Dr. Tarrasch was correct when he said: "Chess, like love, like music, has the power to make men happy".

The beauty of the lesson is that it is either way obvious, or not. It seems so obvious, as the solution appears before a thought has time to consciously arise ... there is no calculation, just instant pattern recognition. Could not have said that 6 months ago(would love to be able to say that on Saturday and Sunday, LOL), so I should thank my chess teacher when I see him tomorrow night ;-)

Monday puzzles are great. They are great for kids of all ages!

As for "sacrifices", chess is a beautiful demonstration of the joys of transcending the "superstition of materialism".

(which is not to say that I mind sacrificing my opponent's pieces)

Beautiful comment:

"Oct-11-10 SamAtoms1980: 20 Qg8+ Rxg8 21 Nf7#.

White didn't sac his queen; he just traded it for the Black king."

NICE!

Oct-11-10  eightbyeight: I spotted this the moment the homepage loaded. "Very Easy" indeed.
Oct-11-10  goodevans: Black has a rating of 2480. Seriously!?!

9 ... fxe6??

17 ... c6???

Your having a larf!

Oct-11-10  DeepThought: Thank you Monday CG.com for helping to rectify my ego :-)
Oct-11-10  iamsheaf: I can't believe this is a game between two 2300+ players..first you drop a piece and then get smothered?!!! Isn't resigning a more respectable option? unless u r playing a 1:00 @ICC .

The game was at a Training Tournament.

Oct-11-10  EXIDE: Smothered mate. Got it !! Monday's are nice, get my hopes all high and ready for the week.
Oct-11-10  wals: Smother me, mother me, with a mate like this any day.

Rybka 4 x 64.

depth 18 : 5 min :

Black. 8...Ng4, (+1.36),allowing the passed pawn to fork Nd7 and pf7, was inferior to Nb6, (-0.61),which threatened the LSBc4,which after moving to b3, would have allowed Ng4.

depth 18 : 6 min :
Black blunder. 9...fxe6,(+3.48), with
Bxe6+ following. Nde5,(+1.34),where it would have been under threat once, and guarded twice, and also protecting f7, and threatening Bc4.

depth 16 : 109 min :
Black blunder.16...Nxg5,(+6.70).Allows
17. Ne or Nfxg5,(+7.57), followed by Nf7+,which could have been prevented by 17...Re7.

Black blunder.17...c6 (+#4).
Bf8,(+6.09), would have given the King a flight square and delayed the inevitable. White finished 2 Knights for a Bishop.

Oct-11-10  Bignevermo: i only saw 20. Nd6 for an exposed check and a pickup of the queen!! ahhh...so much to learn...maybe i should have tried something more frustrating like Golf!! :)..instead ...i must like to feel stupid!!!
Oct-11-10  cuppajoe: Maybe the worst game between masters I've ever seen. Got the puzzle right away, though.
Oct-11-10  iamsheaf: <turbo231> I actually looked at the other game apparently played between the two. That isn't particularly impressive either.

You won't be reading this then.

Mar-15-17  Abdel Irada: ∞

Most unfortunate. Black was a fine player until he was retroactively infected with MAGA virus (which as you can see not only altered his DNA, but even his name).

perfidious: <Abdel Irada>, the name above is the Georgian rendering of that which has become beloved of so many Over Here. (laughs)
