Jul-20-20  andrewjsacks: Great idea for the pun. Very well done.

offramp: Today's pun is partly based on Black's name being the French for <friend> (although Erwin L'Ami is not French, he is Dutch>.

He married Alina L'Ami but they are not a couple, they are Les Ami.

Jul-20-20  nalinw: Very good pun .... good game too
Jul-20-20  Brenin: The pun is even better, since the "win" part of "Erwin" also means "friend". Here White received some very unfriendly treatment from his opponent, who presumably foresaw the final mating net, or something like it, when playing 34 ... g4 rather than picking up a cheap pawn with Nf3+.
Jul-20-20  Morten: Great pun - well done.
Cruel ending by L'Ami

piltdown man: Yes, it's an excellent pun.
Jul-20-20  lentil: Why not 19 Nf7+ ?
Jul-20-20  Brenin: <lentil>: 19 Nf7+ Kg8 20 Nh6+ (20 Nxd8+ Nxb3 leaves White a P down, and other moves lose the N or Q) Kh8 and White has nothing better than repetition with 21 Nf7+ (if 21 Qg8+ then Nxg8, rather than smothered mate with Rxg8 22 Nf7). At this point White was clearly playing for a win, though 19 Qxb4 looks risky after 19 ... Nec6, with both Ns vulnerable and the Q being chased around.

NM JRousselle: White missed a great chance on move 17. e5 would have been strong.
