  FSR: 24...Rxe2+ 25.Kxe2 Re8+ and now (a) 26.Kd3 Qc3#; (b) 26.Kd1 Ne3+ wins the queen; and (c) 26.Kf1 Ne3+, ditto; (d) 26.Kf2 Qd2+; or 26.Kf3 Qxd2.

An Englishman: Good Evening: No matter what suffering might follow, White had to Castle at move 16, 17, or 18 (would have played 16.0-0 myself). Ugly indeed, but if you don’t die fast, you might live.
Sep-30-20  agb2002: Black has a knight for a bishop and a pawn.

White threatens Qxd5.

Black can make the most of the pinned rook with 24... Rxe2+ 25.Kxe2 Re8+:

A) 26.Kd1 Nc3+ (better than Ne3+) 27.Qa3#.

B) 26.Kd3 Qc3#.

C) 26.Kf1 Qxd2 (or Ne3+) wins.

D) 26.Kf2 Qxd2+ wins decisive material and keeps the attack.

E) 26.Kf3 Qxd2 as in D.

Sep-30-20  Mendrys: 22. Qxe6 is move that Zhang should have seen was really bad. 22. Qc3 and she would have been in much better shape.
Sep-30-20  Brenin: Yesterday we had a Wednesday-level POTD on a Tuesday; to rectify matters, today we get a Tuesday-type POTD on a Wednesday. The sac 24 ... Rxe2+, exploiting the pin on the R on d2, is obvious, leading after 25 Kxe2 Re8+ almost immediately to mate or massive material gain. White pays the price for making 10 Q moves out of the first 23.
Sep-30-20  malt: 24...R:e2+ 25.K:e2 Re8+ 26.Kf3
(26.Kd1 Ne3+ wins )
(26.Kd3 Qc3# )
(26.Kf2 Q:d2+ wins )

26...Q:d2

Sep-30-20  mel gibson: So easy.

Stockfish 12 says mate in 13.

chrisowen: No groan in e6 yes no?
Sep-30-20  TheaN: <24....Rxe2+ 25.Kxe2 Re8+> is not too complicated. I actually took longer to see if I missed something. Black wins back the rook on d2 with best play by White <26.Kf3 Qxd2 -+> and comes a piece up.

pittpanther: Quick comment. If white plays 26 Kd1 then 26....Nc3 followed by 27....Qa3 which is mate which is even better than winning the queen with 26....Ne3.
Sep-30-20  Walter Glattke: How not to play chess, 8.dxc5 opens many lines for black, the essential mistake, I think.
Sep-30-20  Walter Glattke: No, I thought for exd5, my mistake.
Sep-30-20  RandomVisitor: <Mendrys> mentions 22.Qc3 as being a playable move that would have been better for white:

eternaloptimist: I solved this puzzle faster than I thought I would! The fact that I saw the ♘ fork threat on the ♔ & ♕ was 1 of the main reasons for that. Also I saw that if 26. ♔d3 then ...♕c3#. I’m 3 for 3 this week so far.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Thought this looked familiar; no credit for me. The game illustrates the importance of castling as a developing move. After 13.Rd1, White has 5 pieces developed vs. 2 Knights for Black, plus a castled King. However, Black has better quality development because his King has found sanctuary. Still think White would have done better to castle at 16, 17 or 18.
