Mar-19-13 | | mira94: It is a draw. |
Mar-19-13 | | boz: Aronian seems to be bailing out. Good prep by Svidler. I respect this kind of draw (if that's what happens) in big events. Svidler is definitely taking this very seriously. |
Mar-19-13 | | Pedro Fernandez: White had to concede the pawn because the activity of all the black pieces. |
Mar-19-13 | | whiteshark: Time to shake hands - there's nothing in this ♘♘ endgame |
Mar-19-13 | | Shams: An amusing end, the horses run free.
So what's next? I vote Carlsen-Grischuk. |
Mar-19-13
 | | FSR: I'm going to take a wild guess and predict a draw. The players are just horsing around now. |
Mar-19-13 | | DcGentle: If they keep exchanging pieces like that we'll see a quick draw and can switch to another game ;-) |
Mar-19-13 | | Sokrates: Perfect and very rare symmetry! |
Mar-19-13 | | boz: Carlsen game next? |
Mar-19-13 | | Ulhumbrus: <<<If 19...cxd4 20.Nc4, then after 20...Rc8! White might actually be worse, e.g. 21.Bxd4 e5 and if the bishop retreats then Rac5.> In this sequence an alternative to 21 Bxd4 is 21 Qe2 unpinning the knight on c4. Then in the event of the move...Ra5-c5 White has the skewer Ba3>
Actually Black has quite a big advantage in this line after 22.Ba3 Rxc4 23.Bxe7 Nd5.> In that case it looks as if White does not have available the zwischenzug Nc4 in reply to ...cxd4 |
Mar-19-13 | | Slink: Hats off to Sivd. White never got anywhere in this game. If the point was to force a draw for black, it worked. |
Mar-19-13 | | chessdgc2: LOL! I suppose someone forgot to tell Ivanchuk his games are being timed.... |
Mar-19-13 | | perfectimpact: Me too.Carlsen-Grischuk. |
Mar-19-13
 | | FSR: Too bad. I would have liked to see 31.Nd4! Nd7! 32.Ne4! Ne5! with all the knights centralized. |
Mar-19-13 | | Eyal: Yep, a case of good prep that killed White's game. |

Mar-19-13
 | | FSR: <Sokrates: Perfect and very rare symmetry!> Shades of Max Weiss vs J Schwarz, 1883. |

Mar-19-13 | | Eyal: <Perfect and very rare symmetry!> It's actually becoming something of a habit in this tournament: click for larger viewAronian vs Carlsen, 2013 |

 | | chancho: Svid is enjoying the press conference. |
Mar-19-13 | | Eyal: Svidler in the press conference: "nice to have a half-rest day". |
Mar-19-13 | | Eyal: Svidler also mentioned that 10...Ra7, supporting the a6 pawn, might look more natural than Rb8, but it can get Black into trouble as shown in Karjakin vs D Dubov, 2012 (though there White didn't exploit his opportunities). |

 | | PawnSac: <Sokrates: Perfect and very rare symmetry!> not quite perfect.
the Aronian-Carlsen draw was perfect tymmetry!

Mar-19-13 | | Ezzy: Last time Svidler played the Queens Gambit Accepted was 10 years ago. Probably caught Aronian off guard. It's not often you see the variation where black plays to hold onto the pawn with 3...a6. The Queens Gambit Accepted isn't a real gambit, because the pawn can always be reclaimed. It's one of the variations you study when first delving into the opening; How to win the pawn back. |

 | | FSR: <Ezzy: ... The Queens Gambit Accepted isn't a real gambit, because the pawn can always be reclaimed. It's one of the variations you study when first delving into the opening; How to win the pawn back.> It depends how White plays. If White is hell-bent to recover the pawn, 3.Qa4+?! Nc6 4.e3 will do so. But after, for example, 3.e4 b5, it's a real gambit. |
Mar-24-13 | | birthtimes: The QGA is a smart drawing weapon by Black. It is extremely difficult to win as White at this level. |
