Mar-19-14 | | patzer2: This Wednesday's puzzle was a bit unusual. I visualized the final game position easy enough, but was unclear about the <22...Kh8 23.Qxh6+ Kg8> line noted by <Phony Benoni>. Plugging in the position after 22...Kh8 23. Qxh6+ Kg8 (below), click for larger viewmy plan of 24. Nh5 Qg4 25. h3 (position below)

Mar-19-14 | | M.Hassan: "Medium/Easy"
White to play 21.? White being 2 pawns down.
The main theme of tonight's puzzle centres around the pin of the f7 pawn and White achieves great advantage because of that: 21.Nxh6+ gxh6
22.Qg6+
<if...Bg7 23.Nh5 and mate next move> 22...........Kh8
23.Qxh6+ Kg8
24.Rf3 Bd4+ out of desparation
25.Kh1 Qg4
26.Rg3 Qxg3
27.hxg3 and Black Queen is lost
Also, it is noted that White's position is so sound that on move 26 need not attack the Queen: 26.Ng6 Qxf3
27.Ne7# |

 | | agb2002: White has a bishop and a knight for the bishop pair and two pawns. Black threatens ... Bxc1.
White can take advantage of the pawn on h6 to open the black castle with 21.Nxh6+: A) 21... gxh6 22.Qg6+ Kh8 23.Qxh6+ Kg8 24.Nh5 (threatens 25.Rf6) A.1) 24... c4 25.Rf6 Qg4 (25...  | | agb2002: My line A.1 is wrong. I missed a quick mate starting with 25.Qg5+ Kh7(8) 26.Rf6 and the simple defense 26... Bxc1 after 26.h3. |

Mar-19-14 | | gofer: A pretty nice combo, with Ba2 doing the long distance pin on poor Pf7. <21 Nxh6+ ...>
21 ... Kh8/Kh7

23 Nh6++ Kh8/Kh7
24 Nf5#
<21 ... gxh6>
<22 Qg6+ Kh8> (Bg7 Nh5 ) <23 Qxh6+ Kg8>
<24 Nh5 Qg4>
<25 Nf6+ Rxf6>
 click for larger viewWhite can win this at a canter, black must block the a2-g8 diagonal with
either Pd6 or Pc5 (or suffer Rg6 winning) and when that has been played Rf6 simply retreats to f3 to win the black queen for a rook. This leaves a R+B+Q v 2R+B+N endgame the major difference being that the open g and h files are going to mean white should win easily. ~~~
Well that variation is Wednesday level, but who's going to give up that easily? |

Mar-19-14 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: The obvious try is 21 Nh6+.
Accepting the sacrifice seems ruinous, in light of:
21 Nxh6+ gxh6
22 Qg6+ Bg7
23 Nh5
where Black is remarkably helpless against 24 Qxg7#, and 21 Nxh6+ gxh6
22 Qg6+ Kh8
23 Qxh6+ Kg8
24 c3
where Black is remarkably helpless against 25 Nh5 and its triple threat of Qg7#, Nf6#, and Nf6+ forking king and queen. But declining the sacrifice leads to:
21 Nxh6+ Kh8/Kh7
22 Nxf7+ Kg7
23 Qh6+ Kg8
24 Ne5+
and White wins the queen. |
|
Mar-19-14 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: Oh. I forgot that if Black declined the sacrifice, then the g-pawn would still be in place. Whoops! |
|
Mar-19-14 | | morfishine: I too almost overlooked Black's DSB and its 'ability' to retreat and cover <g7> and/or <h8> (instead of mechanically capturing on <c1>) ***** |

Mar-19-14 | | zb2cr: 21. Nxh6+, gxh6: 22. Qg6+. Now what? If 22. ... Bg7; 23. Nh5. If 22. ... Kh8; 23. Qxh6+, Kg8; 24. Rf3. In both cases, looks won for White. |

Mar-19-14
 | | Once: Sometimes it's all over too quickly, as my ex wife used to say... Let's start at the beginning. First of all, we want to win. Any win will probably do as an alternative to any loss. But first we want to win. Few things in life are as satisfying as writing "1-0" or "0-1" on your scoresheet where the 1 is you and the zero is the quivering shivering slobbering wreck sitting in front of you. Okay, okay, now you come to mention it there are things which are more satisfying in life, but not normally in a seated position, clothed and within touching distance of a stranger. Perhaps. But better than winning is winning well. The flashy combination, the clever tactic, the swash-buckling sacrifice executed with a nonchalant pinky push. Today black twice denies us our most swashbucklingest of lines. He dies prosaically with little fuss or drama. In the starting position, 21. Nxh6+ just screams out to be played. A knight on the fourth rank means he can hit the sixth rank in one go. Two knights on the fourth, plus a queen in close attendance and bishop providing long range gunnery sergeant sniper support - and we've got the making of a kingside attack. After 21. Nxh6+, the move we really want black to play is 21...Kh7 or 21...Kh8. Please, oh please, play that! Then we would get to play crazy chequers-checking with Nxf7+, Ne6+ and Nxd7. That knight is bouncing around like a draughts piece on speed while the black king shuttles between discovered checks on g8 and h7/h8. It may not be a forced mate but it sho is purty. Black didn't play down that line ... grump. So next comes 21...hg 22. Qg6+. And now we're hoping for 22...Kh8 so we can play 23. Qxh6+ Kg8 24. Rf3 and a fiendish GOOT position. But no, not that either. Black wimps into the afterlife with 22...Bg7 when 23. Nh5 is a bullet to the head. Aw, is that all you've got? Come back and be tortured like a man! |
|
Mar-19-14 | | Mojodomo: My first thought was to continue the theme from Monday and divert the f8 rook with something like <21. Ng6>, R moves followed by <22. Ne7+>, bringing white's rook into play on f7 as well. But the attack initiated with <21. Nxh6+> makes much better use of that knight. |

Mar-19-14 | | kevin86: I moved the queen first; I think that wins, also. |

Mar-19-14 | | PJs Studio: I'm with Phony Benoni and M Haasan on this one. When I was calculating the line I saw 22...Bg7 was horrible.
