Mar-18-16  ljfyffe: Prof. WG Hanbury, having missed his train,in July of 1895 walked 18 miles from Musquash to Saint John NB to play Pollock in a simul: <1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3Bc4 Bc5 4 b4 Bb6 5 b5 Na5 6 Nxe5 Qf6 7Bxf7+ Kd8 8 d4 d6 9Bxg8 Rxg8
10 Bg5 Qxg5 11 Nf7+ Ke7 12 Nxg5>
, and White wins.
Mar-18-16  ljfyffe: Pollock being White, of course.
Mar-18-16  morfishine: Pollock was of course a brilliant player, but it has to be admitted, that anybody who's last name begins with an 'H' followed by a 'V', has little chance of winning a game of chess against virtually anybody
Mar-18-16  luftforlife: <morfishine>: Here's one by FIDE Master Jorgen Hvenekilde over GM Jan Plachetka: Plachetka vs J Hvenekilde, 1980
Mar-19-16  morfishine: <luftforlife> Much appreciated: Sarcasm answered with fact lol

Mar-19-16  luftforlife: <morfishine>: You bet! I enjoy Hvenekilde's games. He's not a terribly strong player, but he can be lively and dynamic, and every now and again he comes in for the big win. I enjoy his blunders too.

MissScarlett: Urcan/Hilbert have this as game #47 from <Lord Tennyson's Competition>, a supplementary event of the British Chess Association congress of 1885, but that can't be so, because Hvistendahl didn't play in this event:

http://www.edochess.ca/tournaments/...

As they themselves point out (p.21) the competition was restricted to players who were members of <the bar, the field of medicine, or the church.> Pollock had studied medicine; Hvistendahl was a textile merchant (which in Manchester, mainly meant cotton).

MissScarlett: I should point out that on both page 21 and page 23, all of Pollock's seven opponents are named (from which he scored 6.5, winning the event) and Hvistendahl wasn't one of them, so the error must be one of those schizophrenic mix-ups where co-authors are involved.

The game first appeared in the <Morning Post> of October 5th 1885 with the description: <The following game was played recently between Mr. W. H. K. Pollock and an accomplished amateur...>

The opponent is <Mr. A.> and the game is the 33-move version given here.

The second sighting was the <Hereford Times> of March 4th 1899, p.3, in which it is noted: <We are indebted to Mr H. E. Bird for the following remarkable game played by the late Mr W. H. K. Pollock at Simpson's, on October 1st 1885. Mr. Bird is of the opinion that the game has not hitherto been published.>

Brief notes, said to be by Pollock, are given and White is identified as <Mo...>

Finally, the game features in the book <Pollock Memories> by F. F. Rowland which appeared toward the end of 1899 as game #16 , p.31, <Played at Simpson's Divan, October 1885.> White is <Mr. Kvistendahl>. Different, more extensive notes by Pollock are given.

Both the <HT> and <PM> have the game ending with <32...Rxd2+>.

Feb-08-23  Messiah: Fantastic finish!
