Feb-07-22  Brenin: I chose 30 Rxf7 Kxf7 (30 ... Rxf7 31 Qxe6 and 32 Rf1) 31 Qxe6+ Kg7 (31 Kf8 Qg8 mate) 32 Rf1, threatening 33 Qe4+. If 32 ... Nc6 then 33 Bd5.

OhioChessFan: Pretty hard for a Monday.
Feb-07-22  TheaN: I'd argue this to be "very easy" given the variation. <30.Rxf7> forces an f7 capture because of threats Rxa7 and Qxe6. <30....Kxf7> 30....Rxf7 31.Qxe6 with Rf1 +- is kind of straightforward. <31.Qxe6+ Kg7 (Kf8 32.Qg8#) 32.Rf1 Nc6> and now either <33.Rf7 +-> or 33.Bd5 +- win, as Black can simply not defend against the seventh rank invading onslaught. I find the direct Rf7+ to be slightly more consistent if followed with 33....Rxf7 34.Qxf7+ Kh6 35.d7 +-.
Feb-07-22  drollere: i had 30. Rxf7 Rxf7, 31. Qxe6 Qf8, 32. Rf1 Kg7, 33. Rxf7+ Qxf7, 34. Qxf7+. 30. .. Kxf7 was less fun.
Feb-07-22  raymondhow: < Pretty hard for a Monday. > If you chose 30.Rxf7, probably good enough for a solve. Like others, I followed up with 31.Qxe6+. The engine says that's better than the game line, while 31.Re1 is better than both.
Feb-07-22  stacase: 30.Rxf7 wins at least a Pawn and at most the game. The final mate was just too cute (-:
Feb-07-22  Tiggler: I also got the main part but did not see the final pretty mate because I considered defenses where the rooks on a7 and a1 got involved. Was this mate actually played? If so, kudos to black. I always think it disreputable when the loser resigns when mate is inevitable. Much better for it to be played and on the scorecard for the delight of the spectators and later enjoyment of ourselves.

Willber G: Rather unhelpful analysis by Stockfish after 30...Rxf7 here:

analysis of move 31.?

Perhaps the rest is <just a matter of technique>.

Feb-07-22  mel gibson: I saw the first ply straight away.
Stockfish 14 puts up a much better fight-
it's not mate in 4 but mate in 23.

30. Rxf7

(30. Rxf7 (♖f4xf7 ♔g8xf7
♖a1-e1 ♕d8-h4 ♕d5xe6+ ♔f7-g7 ♕e6-g8+ ♔g7-h6 ♕g8-f8+ ♖a7-g7 ♕f8-f4+ ♕h4-g5 ♕f4xg5+ ♔h6xg5 ♖e1-e7 ♔g5-f6 g4-g5+ ♔f6xg5 ♖e7xg7 ♔g5-f6 ♖g7-e7 g6-g5 a4-a5 ♘b8-c6 ♖e7-e6+ ♔f6-f5 d6-d7 ♘c6-d8 ♖e6-e8 ♘d8-c6 a5-a6 g5-g4 a6-a7 g4-g3 a7-a8♕ g3xh2+ ♔g1xh2 b4-b3 ♖e8-f8+ ♔f5-e5 ♕a8xc6 ♔e5-d4 ♕c6-d5+ ♔d4-e3 ♖f8-f3+) +M23/57 1113)

White wins, mate in 23.

Feb-07-22  saturn2: 30.Rxf7 can only be good. In any case white gets back the rook and has won a pawn in an already strong position.

scormus: <raymondhow> reassuring comment. I wondered if I'd missed something with my 31 Qxe6 follow up, followed by 32 Rf1. Then I thought perhaps 31 Rf1 first was better.

Agree it's harder than usual for Monday

Teyss: Whatever happened to those good old Queen-sac Mondays? Also went for 31.Qxe6+ but still consider it a solve because everything wins here including 31.Rf1+.

Instead of 31...Ne6 #2 Black could have prolonged the agony with Nd7 to protect the back rank.

Feb-07-22  Stanco: I play 31.Rf1+ (after 30...Kf7)
Feb-07-22  Diademas: Tough monday.
Feb-07-22  Oxspawn: I too find find the Mondays tough and don't always get them (today 'partly') but I prefer this to the 'easy peasy' Mondays. If its not hurting, its not working.

chrisowen: Bid fond q h8 gack no?
Feb-07-22  whiteshark: Counterintuitevely, <31.Qe5> is indeed stronger than grabbing the ♖ immediately with check.
Feb-07-22  awfulhangover: Omg. I saw Qxc5 winning (+7), and got a Monday puzzle wrong. Shame or not shame on me?
Feb-07-22  agb2002: White has a bishop for a knight.

Black threatens Q(R)xd6.

White has Rxf7 and Qxc5.

In the case of 30.Rxf7:

A) 30... Rxd6 31.Rf8+ Kg7 (31... Kxf8 32.Qg8+ Ke7 33.Qf7#) 32.Qg8+ Kh6 33.Rxd8 wins the queen.

B) 30... Rxf7 31.Qxe6 Qf8 32.Rf1 wins.

C) 30... Kxf7 31.Rf1+

C.1) 31... Kg7 32.Qxe6 wins a pawn with an overwhelming position. For example, 32... Nc6 33.Bb5 Nd4 34.d7 Nxb5 35.Rf7+ Kh6 (35... Kg8 36.Re7+ wins) 36.Qe3+ Qg5 (36... g5 37.Qe6+ and mate next) 37.Qxg5+ Kxg5 38.d8=Q+, etc.

C.2) 31... Kg8 32.Qxe6+

C.2.a) 32... Kh8 33.Qe5+ Rg7 34.Rf7 Qg8 35.Re7 wins (35... Qxc4 36.Re8+ Qg8 37.Rxg8+ Kxg8 38.Qe8#).

C.2.b) 32... Kg7 33.Qe5+ Kh6 34.Rf3 wins (34... g5 35.Rf6+ Kg7 36.Rf7+; 34... Qh4 35.Qf4+ mates or wins the queen).

C.3) 31... Ke8 32.Qxe6+ R(Q)e7 33.Rf8+ Kxf8 34.Qg8#.

-----

In the case of 30.Qxc5 Rxd6 31.Raf1 Rdd7 32.Qf2 must be winning.

-----

I'd probably play 30.Rxf7.

Feb-07-22  FM David H. Levin: <Teyss: [...snip...] Instead of 31...Ne6 #2 Black could have prolonged the agony with Nd7 to protect the back rank.>

After 31...Nd7, I don't see a good answer to 32. Rf1+ (32...Kg8 33. Bxe6#; 32...Ke8 33. Qxe6+; 32...Nf6 33. Bxe6+ Kg7 34. g5).
