 | | Korora: When was the last time the key to a Monday puzzle WASN'T "Take my wife--Please"? |
Nov-27-23 | | Brenin: 27 Qd5+ exd5 28 exd5 mate. That took a minute or so, as I was distracted by trying to make Rxd6+ work. |

 | | GoldenKnight: <Brenin: 27 Qd5+ exd5 28 exd5 mate. That took a minute or so, as I was distracted by trying to make Rxd6+ work.> Yeah, same here. |

 | | PawnSac: <Korora: ..Monday puzzle "Take my wife--Please"? > Reminds me of the Henny Youngman 1 liner..
"I take my wife everywhere..
But she finds her way home!"
Funny thing is its Sunday eve for me. I solved the puzzle on the front page before I realized its Q sac monday on Sunday! lol When does the CG clock roll over the days? Does it run on GMT ? |
Nov-27-23 | | Mayankk: Cute little puzzle.
Black King is boxed in by its own pieces as well as the White Bishop on f1-a6 diagonal and the White Rooks on 7th rank and d file. So check check, till it's mate. 27 Qd5+ exd5 28 exd5#. |
Nov-27-23 | | faulty: Could anyone think of a nice pun considering the Black's surname and the highly ironic final position? |
Nov-27-23
 | | tamar: Wham bam thank you Lam? |
Nov-27-23 | | Allderdice83: <Brenin: 27 Qd5+ exd5 28 exd5 mate. That took a minute or so, as I was distracted by trying to make Rxd6+ work.> Same for me, exactly. Harder to see the queen sac mate in the middle of the board. |
Nov-27-23 | | saturn2: 27.Rxd6 No.
27.Qe7 No
27.Qd5 Yes. |
Nov-27-23 | | landshark: Of course look for a Q-sac. Even if Move One is the type of move your brain is hard-wired to ignore: You 'can't' play 27.Qd5+ because it's guarded by a pawn, you dummy!! I forgot it was Monday and spent 10 minutes trying to make more prosaic sacrifices work - finally a light switched on - but <only> because I knew this was a puzzle. There are days I can see such things OTB but most days I can't.... If I had known what day it was I probably would have fared better in my afternoon chess match - |

Nov-27-23
 | | takebackok: Nice, had to think for a second after 27 Rxd6+ was wrong found the right queen sack Monday way! |
Nov-27-23
 | | scormus: Something very appealing about this. All four of W's pieces unselfishly assist for the humble pawn to step up and strike the fatal blow |
Nov-27-23 | | Swedish Logician: Classic Monday! |
Nov-27-23 | | Damenlaeuferbauer: Despite playing a rapid game, the Russian GM Igor Yagupov finally found the mate in 2 moves with the nice queen sacrifice 27.Qd5+!,exd5 28.exd5#. I love Mondays! |
Nov-27-23 | | TheaN: Typically, 27.Rxd6+ has become the Monday standard for CG as is evident by the posts already made. This is weird because a decade or so ago <27.Qd5+> would have been the first move to play. Alas, once you realize you miss a couple of squares around the king after Rxd6+ it shows itself eventually. Then, <27....exd5 28.exd5#>. |
Nov-27-23 | | paavoh: <... I was distracted by trying to make Rxd6+ work.> Exactly my thoughts. 27. Qd5+ exd5 28 exd5# is very pretty. |
Nov-27-23 | | vajeer: While the puzzle is a typical Monday puzzle, what is different is, black seems to have a perfectly playable game just one move earlier by playing Kc8. Kc6 must rank at the very top in blunder ranking. |
Nov-27-23
 | | dorsnikov: Not that easy. The dynamic vision to see it through was difficult. |

 | | chrisowen: I hoof co juvenile Qd5+ awooga ja fab about its lo at c ah its critter Qd5+ dub; |
Nov-27-23
 | | gawain: I found this one very easy, as advertised. I enjoy mates like this one, delivered by a pawn. |
Nov-27-23
 | | Check It Out: I was distracted by Rxd6, same as others. |
Nov-27-23
 | | perfidious: One exception to the rule first written of by Timman that the side who controls the central dark squares in a Sicilian middlegame stands better. |
Nov-27-23
 | | PawnSac: <tamar: Wham bam thank you Lam?> good one! you should suggest it with the pun suggestion link on the front page bottom right |
Nov-27-23
 | | PawnSac: < perfidious: One exception to the rule first written of by Timman that the side who controls the central dark squares in a Sicilian middlegame stands better. > yea that rule generally holds true.
< vajeer: black seems to have a perfectly playable game just one move earlier by playing Kc8. Kc6 must rank at the very top in blunder ranking. > over the top! lol but you're right.. 26. ..Kc8 holds. If Qe7 then ..Rd8 looks pretty equal. Stockfish gives 27.Rg7 as a slight plus for white ( 0.42 ) but still a game |
Nov-27-23 | | jffun1958: Monday is queen sac day:
27. Qd5+ exd5 28. exd5# (all forced).
Queen sac and pawn mate: Very nice! |
