It doesn't make any difference in terms of outcome. But playing Kc5 is not as forcing, giving black more time before it becomes absolutely necessary to give up the rook for the pawn. Compare the line:
1. Kb5 Ra8
2. b7 Rb8
3. Kc6 (any move)
4. Kc7 Rf8
5. b8=Q Rxb8
That's 5 full moves black can still play before sacrificing the rook. Compare it with 1.b7 Rb6,
2. Kc5 Rxb7
That's 2. Way more efficient. The less moves, the better. |

Jul-09-24 | | TheaN: <44.Rxc6 dxc6 (Ra4+ 45.Rc4 +-) 45.b7 +-> as White's king is free as a bird to invade via c5 and Black will have to surrender ♖:♙ with a eyes-closed trivial +♘ endgame. As per discussion, 45.Kc5 +- works too but the pawn on b7 has the function of taking away a8 so Black could struggle on a bit more with 45....Ra8. Sadly for Black there's not enough compensation for the Knight for the additional moves to matter. |

 | | Teyss: Hi Mayankk,
It's a joke, right? CG is the only interesting site with smart users. Except User: harrylime of course. Anyhow, if the week goes on like this I'll be able to solve a Sunday puzzle at last. Probably it's holiday time at CG and a bot is (not) selecting the POTDs. |
