perfidious: That being so, this would seem, therefore, a classic matchup; Blackburne's quip of an opponent in a simultaneous display leaving a glass of whiskey en prise and he snatching it en passant comes to mind.
Nov-09-23  Honey Blend: 42. ♗e5 looks more deadly, then again this is an 1880's simul. Seventh rank infiltrations are effective as always.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Can't really blame L'Oste for wanting to get into an endgame as quickly as possible--anything to avoid one of Blackburne's attacks--but the endgame proves too easy for the WC contender.
Nov-09-23  catlover: "Lost in Space" was a sci-fi television series the in 60's.

offramp: A funny pun, I loved that series. It had a <special guest star>: Jonathan Harris, as the nefarious Dr Smith. Billy Mumy was the boy star who made a trio with the robot.

There was an English actress in the cast: Angela Cartwright. Later, Gary Oldman played Dr Smith.

Great memories thinking about that series. Thanks <OCF>.

If there is then I'm not seeing it. Would have won a pawn and given Black the edge.

Blackburne got diddly squat out of the opening. If L'Oste had earlier found <21...Bf5! 22.Rb2 Bd3> he'd have been in serious trouble.

<...Nc6> was twice an error for Black, the second time by omission. <25...Nc6?> was a mistake but Blackburne himself missed <26.Ne3 Rf4 27.Nd5 Re4 28.Nc7+>. Then when ...Nc6 was the right move Black instead played <31...Na6?> and a few moves later Blackburne was able to invade fatally with Re7.

Nice game and a nice pun to match.

I second that emotion.

L'Oste must indeed have been in space rather than on this planet. What could have possessed him to play 27...Nb8? instead of the obvious and strong 27...Bxf3?
