Jan-23-24  goodevans: Maghsoodloo's lucky day.

Over the course of three moves Warmerdam went from winning to drawing to totally lost.

51...Ra3? (needlessly giving away the B. 51...Ba3 wins)

52.Rxc5 a1=Q 53.e7 Qh8??

Maghsoodloo has been propping up the table for most of the tournament but now leapfrogs van Foreest to leave the Dutchman there.

Jan-23-24  Refused: Ouch somebody missed 54.Rc8!! Qxc8 55.Nb6+

I am not saying that somebody's name is Max...

perfidious: Neither am I, but his other initial is 'Warmerdam'.

In fairness, though many posters would spot the idea as a POTD, that trick is an easy one to overlook in analysis.

An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Feeling a little stunned to see the von Hennig-Schara Gambit at this level, and have never seen 7...Qc7!? until today. Only precedent in the DB: Z H Goh vs R Pert, 2019. 8.Nf3 must improve on that game, but the new line seems to pose some interesting challenges for White.

  tamar: When Maghs met Max…
Jan-23-24  Lambda: The game surely hinges on misevaluation of the position after 53. e7. Surely it must be winning, black thinks, whilst calculating it in advance. I've got the queen, I have checks, I would even be winning with a skewer if the pawn was promoted! But it turns out it's drawn and even contains dangers for the black player. Perhaps he lost out of a disbelief that the position was not a win.

Troller: Black was low on time as well. He had been winning for most of the game, dodging a lot of traps that White set him along the way. After five hours and with little time he first missed that the e-pawn cannot be stopped and unsurprisingly blundered right after.

<43.Rc1> is losing according to the engine but what a devilish idea to have to face as Black.
