An Englishman: Good Evening: Sometimes, Nepomniachtchi is simply impenetrable. Nothing could shake him today.
Apr-15-24  csmath: 30. g6 is supported by Stockfish but it is hard to find a good plan further on. Anand proposed break with b4 and sacking bishop but black can answer sacking his bishop as well and get a counterplay. I do not see a proper break although it seems that black is on the ropes. Apparently neither did Alireza.

perfidious: Just read of some controversy during this game; Firouzja was apparently warned by the arbiter over the noise supposedly made by his shoes, as the result of which he claimed his concentration was thrown off.

Sally Simpson: Vid of the arbiter who reacted to Abasov's complaint that Firouzja's size 10's stomping about put him off.

perfidious: For all the hullabaloo over <Those Shoes> (an Eagles tune from The Long Run), the complainant would have a field day over the constant din of players riffling chips at any live poker event, a practice banned henceforth at the WSOP. Not sure I will know what to do amidst all that quiet when I go out there this summer.

Teyss: For that game, Firouzja was clearly set on winning and Nepo on drawing. Never mind the shoes, Nepo should have complained Firouzja's flashy green suit prevented him from concentrating.

It's surprising all the players including the women are so close to each other for such important events. It's in the main hall where the open area below the mezzanine is about 100 m2, but it doesn't look that big on the pictures or videos. Apparently the organisers have used a substantial part for supporting elements: couldn't they have left more space for the players? Or separated the women's and men's events?

Fusilli: <perfidious: ... as the result of which he claimed his concentration was thrown off.>

Just watched (the first half of) the video on X linked to by <Sally>. The chief arbiter sounds entirely reasonable and appropriately restrained. If Firouzja lost concentration as a result of this, it's on him. He could have been more thoughtful in his choice of footwear.

Teyss: I agree with <Fusilli>, Firouzja could have been more considerate for the other participants. I don't think it's the footwear (apparently it's normal city leather shoes, not boots for instance) but rather the way he's walking, stomping the floor. When one is in a relatively small area with so many players around, one tries to be careful.

Blaming the arbiter for deconcentrating him is far-fetched: it was 1h into the game so he wasn't in time trouble. He's probably trying to find excuses for not being able to win against Nepo despite his superior position, and for his poor performance here in general.

The good news is he was afterwards careful not to make so much noise, which means he's willing to make an effort and apparently didn't do it on purpose in the first place.
