beatgiant: While following the game live, I was surprised to see 13...Be6 14. Be2 and wondering whether this is all standard in this opening, because 14. Bxe6 would wreck Black's kingside.

And indeed, the live engine analysis was suggesting an unusual tactic with 14. Bxe6 fxe6 <15. e5>, the point being 15...Nxe5? loses to 16. f4 Bxg5 17. hxg5, when two White pawns are attacking Black's knights. Black can avoid that, but then his pawn structure would be still further damaged.

Apr-16-24  Atking: Is it the game during which the arbiter notice Abasov's complain about the noise of Firouzja's shoes?

beatgiant: 23...Kg7 again risks a broken kingside pawn structure, and this time Caruana takes the advantage and eventually converts it with excellent technique.

What was there against 23...Kf7 here?

  Teyss: Hi beatgiant,

My thought exactly when I saw 14.Be2. If I have the opportunity to double the Ps of an opponent, I'll generally do it. Except when it's Carlsen who can very well handle doubled Ps, but when do I get a chance to play Carlsen?

The point is that after 14.Bxe6 fxe6 15.e5 dxe5 16.Qxh6 Rxh6 17.Nc5 Nd8 (protecting b7 and e6) 18.Rge1 Rc8 19.Nd3, the tripled unconnected Ps look horrible. It's a small advantage (+1.0 at 35 ply) but in the hands of Caruana substantial enough.

Also, the WB doesn't do much on e2... until the endgame when it becomes key. So did Caruana miss something on move 14 or was it genius anticipating the WB would be superior to his Black counterpart on the long run? Sometimes it's just about a player being more comfortable with B endgames and hence wanting to keep it as long as possible.
