Nepo was stunned when he was told the game had been drawn. I know top-level chess is tough, but shame on MVL.

perfidious: <Geoff>, matters were bad enough when they were after mere world domination.

That was my initial impression also. But 36.Qb3 threatened 37.Nxd5 cxd5 38.Qxd5 Bg7 39.Ne6 Bxe6 40.Qxe6 Rh6 41.Qxf5+,

after which White would soon obtain three pawns for the piece.

Black's 36...Qb8 prevented this, but 37.Qa4 pinned the c-pawn and renewed the threat of 38.Nxd5. Black defended by 37...Qc7, and 38.Qb3 repeated.

White's remarkable piece coordination and Black's somewhat exposed king provide considerable compensation for Black's 2Bs+P v. 2Ns. It doesn't seem obvious how Black could have advantageously avoided a repetition.

I have an engine, which MVL didn't have, but 37.Qa4 can be met with ...Rh2 and if 38.Nxe5 Rxf2 39.b4 Rh2 and Black's pawns will win (about -5 in a shallow search).

I suspect that during the game simply MVL didn't seen the move Rh2. It's happen to every one, even the best.
