Oct-04-24  Everett: White had a completely won game by move 30. What went wrong?

beatgiant: Black avoided 80...Nxf8 81. Bxf8 with an insufficient material draw, instead leaving White a queen up. My first guess is White lost on time.
Oct-04-24  Twilight of the Idol: <beatgiant: My first guess is White lost on time.>

Good guess. GMs Caruana and Chirila discuss this on the newest C-Squared episode.

saffuna: It must exist, but if it's a loss on time, how does black have mating material?

perfidious: In theory, one could conjure up the following type of position, though in practical play it is rather fanciful:

Even after 41.Bxe6, when white didn't get what he should have got out of the middle game, it is unfathomable that he could lose a constellation of 3 pawns vs. 2 and a Bishop-pair versus a pair of Knights. If anyone should have won this endgame it should be white.

Oct-05-24  Yuri Stremel: This game is a revenge for when Firouzja previously flagged to Carlsen on a OCB position where Firouzja had 2 pawns and Carlsen only the bishop. 2019 World blitz, I think? Firouzja was so mad he even filled an official complain.

Oct-05-24  keithbc: yes black does NOT have mating material so must have been a draw?

perfidious: <keithbc>, see the position constructed above; it is artificial, of course, but theoretically possible, so the result was correct.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Perfidious,

That would a cool finish. Black to play.
