Feb-29-04 | | ConLaMismaMano: GM Andrés Rodriguez (2485 ELO) is the best player of history in Uruguay, very aggressive player, i would like to know where is he playing actually. |
|
Apr-01-04 | | capanegra: Andrés Rodríguez Vila (Born in 19 December 1973)
The best player of Uruguayan chess history, and one of the best South American players at the present. He learned the game at 4 years while he was watching his father playing against his uncle (any similarity with other cases is pure coincidence). Started his chess carer at 10 years.
At 13 years he beats the Uruguayan champion Bernardo Roselli. At 14, he finished fourth in the World Chess Championship sub 14 ( played in San Juan de Puerto Rico), and classifies as the better player of America. At 17, becomes the Panamerican champion sub 20, and converts into the first International Master of Uruguayan chess history. At 18 years, he gains world prestige, after finishing fifth in the World Championship of his category, playing against the best players. At 20 years, he settles in Argentina (where he lives today). In 1997 he happened to be the first Uruguayan Grand Master.
Today, his ELO is 2485.
I met Andres more than once (Uruguay is a small country), but didn’t talk with him very much because I was a very shy kid, and, in spite of being only two years older, he looked like a giant to my eyes. He seemed to be a very nice person. I also have some beautiful games played by him which are not in the database. I will submit them when I have time. |

Jul-30-05 | | capanegra: I submitted this game twice in the last year, but unfortunately it wasn't loaded, so I'll write it down in order to share it with you. It is a game Andrés played in the Uruguayan Championship in 1990 against the ex Uruguayan champion Jose Bademian. The game is genuine because I was there standing in front of the board among all the rest of people. The resolution is so nice that it was published in the newspapers the day after. Jan-11-08 | | juandadamo: In FIDE's ratings, his rating is 2566. I think due to his last name, is Rodriguez Vila not just Rodriguez (a spanish player)

 | | Richard Taylor: It is impossible for a 4 year old to learn chess by watching games. This is a load of cobblers from the Capablanca legend which was probably embellished also. In all likelihood his parents told him and spread the rumour to make him seem like a prodigy or something. But he is clearly a very talented player... |
|
Oct-09-17 | | john barleycorn: <Richard Taylor: It is impossible for a 4 year old to learn chess by watching games. ...> On your distinguished expertise I am about to believe it. Just about to. |
|
Oct-09-17
 | | Richard Taylor: Well, think about it, it is a nonsense.
I think what I said is correct. I doubt Capablanca recalls. And ever since that has been said every man and his dog who learned chess leart it at 4 or 5 watching someone. I have grandchildren and no way do they learn chess at such an age. Just keep your @#$%*&!# antenna healthy Comrade Barleycorn whoever you really are... |
|
Oct-09-17 | | john barleycorn: <Richard Taylor: Well, think about it, it is a nonsense. I think what I said is correct. ...>
It is not about what *you* think is correct but about what is correct. There is a slight difference. After you learned that (the odds are against it) come back and substantiate your claim. But you know it is impossible to do that. |
|
Oct-09-17 | | john barleycorn: <Richard Taylor: ... I have grandchildren and no way do they learn chess at such an age. ...> This, of course, has nothing to do with the fact that they are *your* grandchildren. |
