Aug-09-04  tomh72000: <azaris> Thanks for taking the time to prove my point. Incredible statistics, really.
Aug-09-04  acirce: It is a very common name there. They also had a president called Ter-Petrosian until 1998 who had to resign due to the Nagarno-Karabakh conflict (he wanted to make territorial concessions and the opposition, well, opposed it).
Jan-16-05  MidnightDuffer: Interesting info Acirce; always a pleasure to read what you have to say!

Funny I should see this post nearly five years after the fact. As it happens there is a fairly new employee where I work who is from Armenia. This morning I asked him if he had heard of Tigran Petrosian. Evidently he is a non-chessplayer, and he definitely is too young to remember the "Iron Tiger" as World Champion. Just the same, his response was priceless: "Petrosian? MY name is Petrosian!" (I hadn't known his surname up to that point.) So Petrosian really IS a common Armenian name indeed!

And I am changing my name to Casanova ... or perhaps Caissanova.

Dec-16-17  WhiteRook48: Happy birthday, GM. Petrosian! You now have a year of life for every square on the chessboard. That's meaningful.

Sort of a shame that his most notable game is the one where he was the victim of a defensive fortress swindle in a Q v. B position, though.
