Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-24-21  Alan McGowan: The Edmonton Journal of 23 October 1939, reporting on the experience of Walter Holowach at the Buenos Aires Olympiad, said that 'While studying music in Vienna for six years in the early 1930s he was also a pupil of Anatol Gerschenkron...'
Nov-26-21  Alan McGowan: Anatol Gerschenkron was born 28 January 1911 in Odessa. He died 9 November 1938 in Paris. En route from Vienna he caught a chill which developed into pleurisy.

His name first appears in the Wiener Schachzeitung in 1928; he took part in the chess problem solving competition.

In 1934, with I. Kotrč, he authored Eröffnungen in der modernen Schachpartie.

In February 1934, representing Austrian workers, he visited Riga, Latvia for a chess tournament that was part of a winter sports and cultural festival.

He played in his only Trebitsch Memorial in 1934/35.

In 1935 he was 2nd in the Heitzing Schachverein club championship, scoring 10 points and finishing only one point behind Adam.

In the same year he was =1st with Rudolf Palme in a qualifying tournament for the Austrian championship, both scoring 7½, ahead of Dr Weil, S. Rubinstein etc.

On 10 January 1937 he played board 5 in the Vienna-Brno (Brünn) match, winning against Rudolf Pitschak.

His brother was Alexander Gerschenkron, an economic historian and professor at Harvard University.

Information from: Vladimir Neistadt (Siberia); Dominique Thimognier (France) and 'The Fly Swatter' (2002), by Nicholas Dawidoff, a study of Alexander Gerschenkron by his grandson.
