JORGE SAMMOUR-HASBUN
(born Mar-12-1979, 46 years old) Honduras (federation/nationality United States of America)

[what is this?]

FIDE Master, formerly known as Jorge Zamora. Born in Honduras to Palestinian parents and moving to the U.S. around the age of 12.

In 1988, won the U-10 world championship.
and later won the U-12 championship.
U.S. Junior Champion in 1996.

He broke numerous records including being the youngest FIDE Master ever in 1988 and the youngest player in the U.S. to defeat a grandmaster in 1991. He even received lessons from the legendary Mikhail Tal.

Jorge left chess for a steady paycheck in the construction industry, and soon after started a family. He now lives in Warwick, Rhode Island. In an interview with Chess Life Online, Jorge spoke of his long absence from competitive chess.

"Chess was like my lover, my woman," he said. "I thought I couldn't live without her ... but then three years go by, and you forget. Humans will set themselves not to think about things that bring them pain ... and chess was like that, an impossible, painful love."

Jorge made major waves in the chess community after winning the 2007 Dos Hermanas Blitz Championship on ICC. Top players from around the world were skeptical that this relatively unknown or forgotten player could put up such a fight against the world's best blitz players. Jorge's qualification into the event prompted the ICC to require that Jorge play the tournament under the supervision of a tournament director in his home. He accepted the slight and turned away all doubters by cutting through the field and defeating GM Tigran Petrosian in the finals. He would go on to repeat as champion the following year.

Mar-22-07  geraldo8187: this guy is the only one to make the 32-man knockout stage of dos hermanas without being an IM or GM. impressive.

perfidious: For more games, see Jorge Medina-Zamora.
Mar-24-07  Illogic: In a stunning result, Jorge won the Dos Hermanas tournament today, beating GM Tigran Petrosyan in the finals.

chancho: <geraldo8187> Jorge has the IM title.
Mar-24-07  Strongest Force: We know about Jorge in NYC. In fact, we've known about Jorge since he was 8 years old. He started playing masters blitz chess when he was eight. At the time, everyone thought he would be the next Capablanca.

chancho: I saw him beat Patrick Wolff in 1991. He was twelve at the time and won the tournament to boot.
Mar-24-07  Strongest Force: Chancho, wasn't Wolfe a GM at the time? In my previous message what I meant to say was that Jorge was playing master-level chess when he was eight!

  chancho: <Strongest Force:Chancho, wasn't Wolfe a GM at the time?>

Yes, he was.

Mar-25-07  geraldo8187: <chancho> my fault. ICC has him listed as having no title.
Mar-26-07  Strongest Force: I was shocked to learn (ICC interview) that Jorge hasn't played a serious game of OTB chess in ten years! I know that many years ago a blitz match was arranged hastily between young Jorge & a visiting Kasparov. Gary won but was impressed with Zamora's skills. If it's true that he wants to play serious chess again, the USA will soon have another GM!
Mar-26-07  aragorn69: Jorge was a has-been!
Mar-26-07  Prugno: I must say I'm a little shocked by ICC's behaviour... in previous editions of this event they had no doubts about disqualifying very strong players such as Mamedyarov and Ni Hua for cheating, and now they have nothing to say about this performance which looks highly suspicious to say the least?!
Mar-26-07  Strongest Force: Prugno, maybe they have inside info on how really good Jorge really is?
Mar-26-07  Illogic: Prugno - suspicious how? Have you found games that strongly correlate with Fritz or some other engine?

JointheArmy: ICC always bans people from the online tournaments that look suspicious. No proof, no investigation just if you play well you don't get rewarded you get booted. Nice to see a policy change or whatever made them ease up on cheating allegations.
Mar-26-07  ChessVip: An old spanish article about Jorge Zamora:

Zamora born in Honduras.

chancho: I remember seeing this game in Chess Life back in 1991. He was 12 at the time.

Mar-26-07  veigaman: how old is he now?

chancho: About 28 years of age.
Mar-27-07  DP12: Zamora and the ICC admins, like JFernandez, must be friends. Also he is ,among US players, famously talented and easily a blitz GM, like some of those famous Moscow blitz husslers. I could see some of those making a run at a DH championship.
Mar-27-07  Strongest Force: DP12, you've hit the nail right on the head. Jorge is very well known amongst internet people.
Mar-27-07  Prugno: OK, I apologize, it looks like Mr. Zamora (easier to write than his new name) definitely wasn't cheating, apparently there even was an ICC arbiter at his home during the event. Still, <JointheArmy> got the point of my previous remark: in the past the managers of this tournament had been perhaps a bit too quick in banning successful participants. For instance, just a few days before the final I played in one of the qualifiers where GM Landa got disqualified after scoring 11/12.

I haven't looked at the games, so I have no idea what it was all about, but anyway results in online events should never be taken seriously unless an arbiter is present. Computer cheating can perhaps be inferred, but if I invite an IM friend at home (perhaps even asking him to play openings from my repertoire) the games will look very "human" and still be played at a much higher standard than mine!

Mar-27-07  Strongest Force: Thanks for the arbiter info Prugno. The ICC has become to big & full of themselves. I was there when they were still free & I could write a book on the shady things that both the ICC & its members perpetrate on a daily basis. It was a smart move for Jorge to have an arbiter present.

JointheArmy: I wasn't even aware you could have an arbiter present at your home. What a brilliant idea. Pretty soon you could have USCF rated tournaments with that.
Mar-29-07  a.nugent: Jorge has enough GM norms! Can't the USCF submit the application? What gives USCF?
