Jul-30-20 | | unferth: <not when were talking about earning/losing $10M in sports salaries> but we're not. as I noted above, the typical NFL player makes about $900,000 a year, and hundreds of them make less than half of that. that's not lifetime-security money, and you can't play a season without those guys. |
|
Jul-30-20
 | | perfidious: There are a helluva lot of taxi-squad players for each of the superstars making upwards of $10m per year, not to mention all those who are fringe members of the roster who are one injury away from returning to the real world and languishing in relative obscurity. |
|
Jul-30-20
 | | HeMateMe: apparently you've never lived in a poor or lower middle class area, the very spawning grounds for the majority of NFL athletes. If they are willing to risk almost certain chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), damage to the brain, getting covid -19, hurting almost zero young, primo <athletes>, would be a walk in the park by comparison. Put another way, a guy in east St. Louis with grim prospects has a chance to earn $1M a year in the NFL, with a 1/1,000 chance of dying after contracting the corona virus, or he can live at home, social distancing proper, and live on $200 a week in government handouts. 99 in a 100 23 year old men would go for the money. |
|
Jul-30-20
 | | HeMateMe: in a 'scab league' what I mean is that if four guys on your starting NFL team test positive you replace them with four guys from the taxi squad, and the league schedule goes on. I wasn't suggesting that all the regulars sit and do nothing. the guys who sit lose 14 days and are then mostly immune after than. The league schedule goes on and everyone gets paid, same as in baseball if a few players on one team test positive. It's a win/win for the players AND the owners. Everyone still gets paid. |

 | | plang: ..and yet a number of NFL players are opting out... |
|
Jul-30-20
 | | HeMateMe: 10 out of 400 guys? is that 'a number'? |
|
Jul-30-20
 | | plang: 29 this week so far |
|
Jul-30-20
 | | HeMateMe: ok, 29. an NFL active roster is 45 players, on 32 teams? 45x32 = 1440. 29 = 1.5%? |
|
Jul-30-20
 | | plang: We'll see. Every day more baseball games get cancelled - I think NFL players are watching what is happening. |
|
Jul-30-20 | | unferth: well of course there are plenty of young men desperate enough to do that, but the NFL has to work in concert with the players union; it can't just hire guys off the streets. I'd turn your argument on its head--if you're already set for life, as most of the name talent & all the big stars are, why would you risk your health, the health of your loved ones, and possibly your life for a few more $$? if I were Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers, I sure wouldn't want any part of it--and good luck selling a season without those guys, though I'm sure the NFL would try to do it. |

 | | WannaBe: Wonder if Tom Brady's gonna Opt Out... You think he is "desperate" for money? On that point, I am surprised if not a bit shocked, NFL teams are handing out record contracts like there is no tomorrow. (Maybe there <IS> no tomorrow) KC, with Mahomes, SD, with J. Bosa. I mean "C'mon Man". People are being laid off, can't pay rent. Have a hard time getting their kids to remote learning (Imagining jobless and can't pay internet bill. What is more important, food on the table, or internet for Zoom and school?) I know Mahome bought a piece of KC Royals, and people are all woo and ahh and how proud he is of his new city/home. M. Jordan's foundation just donated 2.5M for black voter registration. I mean C'mon Man, what is he/his foundation worth? (Hang on, let me google) M. Jordan is (according to Forbes) to be worth 2.1 <BILLION>, 2.5M is probably what he spends at Whole Food Market for one month of All Natural, No Preservative, Naturally farmed, Cage free, Range free food. Okay, 10% of 2.1B is 210M, 1% would make it 21M, and M. Jordan donated 2.5M How much have Oprah donated, to any cause? What is she worth? Enquiring mind like to know. Ex-wife of Jeff Bezo have donated a bunch of money to Historically Black University and Colleges, including such Howard, Spillman, etc. You can google it, if you don't believe me. C'mon Jordan, Oprah, step up, <REALLY STEP UP>, and not just be behind a mike and say nice words and some "pocket change". |

I'd turn your argument on its head--if you're already set for life, as most of the name talent & all the big stars are, why would you risk your health, the health of your loved ones, and possibly your life for a few more $$?> one half of NFL players declare bankruptcy five years after retiring. Google it. If the Kansas City Chiefs are playing the Green Bay Packers on MNF and five starters from each side are missing do you really think there won't be a live and a television audience? |
|
Jul-30-20 | | unferth: oh, there'll be an audience for sure, same way there was for the scab ball in the 80s. I'm guessing it'll be a lot more than five a side, though. but the willingness of the players notwithstanding, I just don't see it working. just way too much close contact among way too many people. |

 | | saffuna: <one half of NFL players declare bankruptcy five years after retiring. > It's a lot, but half?
<A new study found that nearly 16 percent of former players end up filing for bankruptcy within a dozen years of retiring. It also revealed that career earnings and the length of a player's career had little impact on whether they will end up broke. Star players are just as likely to file for bankruptcy as those who spent most of their time on the bench. "Having played for a long time and been well paid does not provide much protection against the risk of going bankrupt," wrote the study's authors, who teach at Cal Tech, George Washington University and the University of Washington. Among the high profile players who have filed for bankruptcy are Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp, Pro Bowl wide receiver Andre Rison and Pro Bowl quarterback Mark Brunell. Sapp made more than $50 million during his career, according to salary tracker Spotrac, but filed for bankruptcy in 2012, within five years of his final game.> https://money.cnn.com/2015/04/15/re... |

 | | saffuna: Quite a few players already have a face shield on their helmets. Would it be practical to do that for all players? Or would it inhibit quarterbacks or others from playing up to their potential? |
|
Jul-30-20
 | | saffuna: I would think that without crowds the NFL could try a couple of things the XFL was using last year. How about a mike that can pick up what is said in huddles? What about what refs say among themselves or to players? That would be simple with no crowd noise. |

 | | saffuna: Somehow I had never seen this game-ending play where the Cubs runner trips between third and home and a wild rundown ensues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ht...
Sometime in the early 90s. |

LOL at the director calling a switch to a shot of the dugout right in the middle of all that action. wonder if he's the same ESPN guy who missed the start of the Dodgers season last week. |
|
Jul-31-20
 | | saffuna: Watched the second half of the Boston-Milwaukee "opener." Love Us, Education Reform and Enough played well for the Celts, but Equality is just unstoppable on the Bucks. 14 for 20 with 15 rebounds and 7 assists. |
|
Jul-31-20
 | | perfidious: In a playoff series, Bawston could succeed vs Milwaukee by going dog nuts and making all the long-range shots Bucks leave open as part of their game plan, the reason they occasionally lose to weak teams. |
|
Aug-01-20
 | | HeMateMe: did I read a news article correctly that Rick Pitino is back in college basketball, after being forced out at Louisville for getting money and hookers to top prospects? That didn't take long, rehabilitated! |
|
Aug-01-20
 | | WannaBe: ESPN reported 3 more staff and one player on StL Cards have tested positive. More games postponed. Ugh |
