 | | WannaBe: 25 years ago, the last MLB forfeit game took place: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id... I remember one NHL game, where the give-away that night was a puck. And you get your when entering the arena... Well, you can guess what happened. Now many teams that gives away ball/puck hand them to you as you LEAVE the game. |
|
Aug-10-20 | | unferth: I was at that game! up in the Uecker seats, for some reason. must've gotten there late, because I didn't get a ball to throw. not that I would have, but that strike zone was obviously bs, even from 500 feet. |

 | | WannaBe: Doesn't <EVERYONE> get to LAD game late?! Blame the traffic on the 10, 101, 405, 710, heck, even the 5!! =))) |

 | | WannaBe: So... A little bit of history will be made today, TOR is playing a 'home' game in Buffalo, NY. I think I will tune in and watch a bit of the game. =)) |

 | | saffuna: Dodger Stadium.
I went to a game last year, arriving early to watch batting practice. We had to wait outside until batting practice was over. Only season-ticket holders could watch batting practice. |

 | | WannaBe: The field at Buffalo looks pretty good! |

Aug-11-20
 | | chancho: First three seeds in the East: Milwaukee, Toronto, Boston. In the West: Lakers, Clippers, Nuggets.
With the current format, there is no real homecourt advantage to speak of. It should all come down to which team is playing the best, and avoidance of injuries Any predictions? |

 | | WannaBe: <chancho> Charleston Chiefs. I bet all my chess bux on them. With P. Newman and Hanson triplets. Unbeatable. On the other hockey news... https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id... 5 OTs!!!!
God, I love hockey. Play until you drop. (But then again, unlike baseball, you don't play 17 innings and sleep at 3AM and have a 1PM afternoon game...) =))) |

 | | saffuna: <God, I love hockey. Play until you drop. (But then again, unlike baseball, you don't play 17 innings and sleep at 3AM and have a 1PM afternoon game...)> Tonight there were two games scheduled at the same arena in Toronto. The first game went five overtimes and six hours, so the second game started at something like 11 p.m. |

 | | saffuna: Another case was at Wimbledon two years ago.
The two semifinals were scheduled one after the other. The first was between big serving Kevin Anderson and bigger serving John Isner. So they went on and on in the fifth set, Anderson finally breaking serve to win 26-24. But then the other semi, likely to produce the tournament winner, between Djokovic and Nadal (another very close match) could not be finished and had to be completed the next day. Afterward the rules were changed to play a tiebreaker at 12-12 in the final set. |

 | | WannaBe: Best movie about hockey, ever!! When they won the trophy and paraded through the town, you can see the movie marquee in the background. Totally hilarious. See if I can google an image of that. |

 | | WannaBe: "I am listening to the song!!!" Cant remember which Hanson brother said that in the movie. But here is the picture of the marquee I was talking about: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_gUu2vYfX... |

 | | chancho: Here's the Hanson brother who said that:

 | | HeMateMe: slap shot is a cult classic in Canada
"We're putting on the [tin] foil coach!" [wrapped around their hands before punching opposing players.] The player doing a strip tease while skating around during a brawl was all time classic. The three actors who played the Hansons dined out on that one movie for twenty years. Product endorsements, corporate speaking gigs, etc. prescient of superstar Paul Newman to take a seemingly B-level movie script, a black comedy, and seeing a winner in it. |

 | | saffuna: Who are these people?
Scott O'Quinn Burks Thybulle Milton |

Aug-12-20

Gotta admit this video really cracked me up.

 | | perfidious: Interesting bit on the topic of awarding wins to pitchers in baseball, a sometimes far from easy task: https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/... |
|
Aug-13-20 | | Gryz: <chanco asked: Any predictions?>
The East will be simple. No upsets. So in the ECF: Bucks beat Heat & Raptors beat Celtics. I think there's a 80% chance the Bucks make it to the NBA finals, and 20% for the Raptors. 0% for any of the other teams. The West is a bit more complicated. |
|
Aug-13-20 | | Gryz: The Lakers will not make it to the WCF. This will be the big upset in the west. Lakers looked really mediocre these last 2 weeks. Either the nr8 is gonna beat them (Suns or Blazers). Or Rockets/Thunder. Nuggets vs Jazz can go anyway. But the winner will be elminated in the next round by the Clippers. Clippers still look good. I think there's a 70% chance the Clippers will win the WCF. The fun match in the first round will be the Rockets vs OKC. Anything is possible. I'm rooting for OKC. Ever since I started watching NBA again, I enjoyed watching them. (That was in 2012, when the 23-year old OKC players made the NBA finales). But to my surprise, now that everybody is gone (Westbrook, Durant, Harden, etc), the current team is actually lots of fun to watch. Especially the 3-guard line-up (CP3, SGA and Dennis). Dort is key. He got injured last night. If he plays in the first round, then OKC will beat Houston. If Dort doesn't play, then Houston will win. So finals: Bucks (80% to win the east) versus Clippers (70% to win the west). If it gets this far, I think the Bucks have 60% chance to win the finals. |
|
Aug-13-20
 | | plang: Good - thanks - you saved me a lot of trouble - now I don't have to watch. |
|
Aug-13-20 | | Gryz: Did I say something wrong ? These are just my opinions. I'm sure I'll be wrong somewhere, so there might be matches that will be more exciting than we expected. Just look at the Suns in the bubble now. The last 8 years have been a lot more boring. It was either Lebron's team, or the Gold State Warriors. Only the Spurs and the Raptors caused some surprise. The playoffs can be exciting. But most of the time, the top seeds win it. See this list of champions by seed:
https://old.reddit.com/r/nba/commen... That list is from 2018. Since then Warriors (#3) won it in 2018, and Raptors (#2) won it in 2019. So the list would be: Seed - Number of winners - percentage
1 - 52 - 71.2%
2 - 11 - 15%
3 - 8 - 11%
4 - 1 - 1.4%
5 - 0 - 0%
6 - 1 - 1.4%
7 - 0 - 0%
8 - 0 - 0%
This seasons seeding is: Bucks, Lakers, Raptors, Clippers & Celtics, Nuggets. So yes, it's very likely that the Bucks win. If the Clippers win the finals, as nr 4 seed, that would actually be very rare. |
|
Aug-13-20
 | | WannaBe: S. Strasburg just got ejected by home plate ump. Why is that unusual? He was sitting in the stands (his off day) and disagreed with ball/strike call. =))) |
|
Aug-13-20
 | | HeMateMe: I'd like to see the Buck, Rockets or Thunder become NBA champs. They've paid their dues. i never got tired of watching the splash brothers Warriors, but it got boring when they acquired Kevin Durant. It was just shooting fish in a barrel for a team stacked that deep in talent. Getting Durant kind of hurt basketball, I think. I have new found respect for Lebron James. He made the finals 8x in a row. Very few have done anything comparable. Bill Russell did it. Magic Johnson sort of did it. Michael Jordan probably would have done it, had he not taken two years off. Lebron won two titles in Miami with a Golden state type super team. on an undermanned Cleveland team he managed to steal a championship from the Warriors. |
