KATERYNA LAGNO
(born Dec-27-1989, 35 years old) Ukraine (federation/nationality Russia)
PRONUNCIATION:
[what is this?]

Ekaterina Alexandrovna Lagno (Kateryna Olexandrivna Lahno in Ukrainian) was born on December 27, 1989 in Ukraine. In 2002 she became, at the age of twelve years, four months and two days, the youngest Woman Grandmaster (WGM) in chess history. In 2007 she became the eleventh woman to be awarded the Grandmaster title.

In 2003 she won a round-robin in Kramatorsk with a performance rating of 2622, finishing a full point ahead of a field that included three grandmasters. In 2005 she became European Women's Champion after winning a tie-break match with Nadezhda Kosintseva and repeated this success in 2008. She qualified for the Women's World Championship Knockout Tournament (2012) and defeated Khaled Mona in the first round, only to fall to Georgian IM and WGM Lela Javakhishvili in the second round, thereby exiting the title contest.

In 2009 she married French GM Robert Fontaine.

Dec-17-06  jennthebabe: The games are also being broadcast live on playchess.com.
Dec-18-06  samsal27: this girl will become world champion!

alexmagnus: She was a champion already many times in her life. You should say detailed: she will become the overall world champion (or at least the women's one).

  alexmagnus: Katy won:)
Dec-18-06  samsal27: <alexmagnus> I meant Women's World Champion. After the victory today, when asked about if she played better or Parimarjan played badly the Katja wittily said,"normally your opponent has to play badly if you have to win a game".
Dec-18-06  Karpova: Very nice game by Kateryna against the clear favourite Parimarjan whose rating is more than 60 points higher than hers (i don't need to remind you of Topalov's famous words...)

alexmagnus: Draw in the third game.
Dec-20-06  ganeshknight: Draw in the 4th game as well... 2.5-1.5 in favour of Lahno
Dec-21-06  Sularus: <Karpova> humor me please. what were topalov's famous words? thanks in advance!
Dec-21-06  Archives: It was something along the lines of, "I'm not a crook!"
Dec-21-06  Sularus: at the same age, who was stronger between this girl and judit polgar?
Dec-21-06  Karpova: <Sularus>
Here's an interview from Oct-22-2005: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

Topalov: <“There’s a big difference in our ratings," Topalov stressed. "In chess 60 Elo points means a different class altogether. If Vladimir was offered to play against someone 60 Elo points below himself he’d simply burst out laughing.>

Dec-21-06  Karpova: The fifth game looks like a draw - an ending with bishops of opposite colour and 2 pawns for black and 1 for white.
Dec-21-06  Karpova: Draw agreed!

Kateryna leads 3-2 after 5 games with one more game with FIDE time control to be played.

I think it's pretty strange that they don't have a single rest day.

Dec-21-06  norami: <Sularus> Judit Pulgar was rated 2555 at age 12. I was stunned when I saw that, in 1989. I figured it must be a misprint. How could a 12 year old be rated 2555? Keep in mind there's been about 50 to 100 points of rating inflation since then so she was over 2600 in today's scale.
Dec-21-06  Sularus: thanks <norami> and <karpova>

judit is still my main babe.

alexmagnus: Well, since the rating infation is questionable, I'll go from 2555 as the number.
Dec-21-06  Sularus: <Topalov: “There’s a big difference in our ratings," Topalov stressed. "In chess 60 Elo points means a different class altogether. If Vladimir was offered to play against someone 60 Elo points below himself he’d simply burst out laughing.>

Those who make themselves great shall be humbled. And those who humble themselves shall be made great.

Dec-23-06  malthrope: Close call for Katya in the Game #6 (Pari missing a forced mate on move 28 - P Negi vs Lahno, 2006). Should be fun a full weekend of Rapid games (3 per day at 25m/10s) and 6 Blitz chess games (5m/5s) on Christmas day! :-) "Ho-Ho-Ho" (that's Santa speaking not a 'rap' song!)... ~lol~ ;-)

<Sularus> Well stated! :-)

Dec-23-06  samsal27: <Those who make themselves great shall be humbled. And those who humble themselves shall be made great.> Nice!

alexmagnus: Turning 18 in December? Ehrm, shouldn't it be 17?
Dec-23-06  samsal27: Yes, it should be 17. Strange ... TOI is India's leading newspaper and is normally careful about such things ...
Dec-23-06  Laskerschueler: 3 - 0 in favor of Catherine the Great. Well, boys have to learn :)
Dec-23-06  malthrope: <Laskerschueler> Actually it's +4 (the accumulative score of all 18 games decides! - 19 total games if 'Armageddon' is needed which with the course of events appears highly unlikely). :-) Confirmed: Katya was born December 27, 1989 in the Ukraine (born in Lviv, grew up in Kramatorsky and now resides in Donetsk) and she'll be 17 in a few days!

<samsal27> Thanks for Katya's interview link in 'The Times Of India' - I want to ride an elephant & see a 'snake!' ;-)
