 | | saffuna: <Everybody knows the Last Waltz version, this one is from the Ed Sullivan show.> Sullivan's presentation is really irritating. It just shows one member of the group, then another. Never shows the entire group in one shot, as is always done. Also, the sound balance is way off. The voices are set high, and the instrumental backing can barely be heard. |
|
Jul-27-25 | | stone free or die: Well, it wasn't the best, ok - but still it wasn't that bad. (I agree a few band shots of them playing would've been nice - had to wait till the end for that. It was Ed Sullivan - some degree of "stiffness" is to be expected!) |

 | | saffuna: Agree. And it least it was live, not lip-synched. I saw The Band play in Berkeley two months after this performance. My first time. Honestly, the performance was stiff, sounded over-rehearsed. It was like they didn't want to make any mistakes. The other times I saw them were much better, infinitely better. |
|
Jul-27-25 | | stone free or die: <saff> I'm so jealous of your "band" history - you got to see a lot of the very best. The Band was always best when loosest. I remember talking about this with a friend some time ago - saying how they always sounded like they were about to fall apart. Here's another clip of The Band in situ (circa 1969) - though there's lots of talk overs by clowns like Clapton, Springstein, Mahal and Scorzese! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcG... |

 | | saffuna: That video is much much better.
For me the best I ever saw them was outdoors at Stanford in 1976. It was daytime and about 90 degrees, maybe hotter. It was the first show of the tour, what turned out to be their final tour. No horns, nothing except the five of them. Kind of ragged, not polished at all, but absolutely brilliant. They were suffering in the heat, but kept going. |
|
Jul-27-25 | | stone free or die: Lucky you.
Maybe, with the advances in AI, we'll be able to extract the video from deep inside your cranium, for the rest of us! (OK, stupid thought, but who knows...) |
