KRISHNAN SASIKIRAN (born Jan-07-1981, 44 years old) India [what is this?] Krishnan Sasikiran was born in Chennai, and is one of the generation of high-achieving Indian players following in the footsteps of Viswanathan Anand. He learned chess at the age of ten and gained the GM title in 2000. He won the historic Hastings Chess Tournament in 2001 and the Asian Championship in 2002. His most recent successes were outright firsts in the Najdorf Memorial (2008) with 6.5/9, the 18th Pamplona International (2008) with 5/7 points and the Corsica Masters Open (2011) with 7.5/9. In 2012, Sasikiran and his team Petroleum Sports Promotion Board won the Indian Team Championship. On the back of strong performances in the 2011-12 Czech Extraliga and the Russian Team Championship (2012) in the May 2012 rating period, he achieved his highest rating to date. In May 2013, he placed =2nd (6th on tiebreak) at the Asian Continental Championship, managing to qualify for the World Cup (2013) as 2nd placed Oliver Barbosa had previously qualified for that event. At the World Cup, Sasikiran defeated Romanian GM Constantin Lupulescu in the first round but was eliminated when he lost to Russian GM Sergey Karjakin in the second round. Sasikiran has represented India at every Olympiad since 1998, usually on board 1 (5 times). At the Tromso Olympiad (2014) in Tromsø, he won individual silver for board 3 as well as team bronze. In October 2013, he played board 4 for the Czech team G-Team Novy Bor, scoring a solid 5/7 to help his team to first place in the European Club Cup (2013). He played the white side of the Modern Benoni in this 66 move game. The above was in the second round, with Sasikiran being rested in the first round. Of the 6 players fielded by a team in each round, no more than 3 non- Russians can be included. The third round is in progress now. Though a pawn up in the endgame, Sasikiran failed to convert it into a win, notably missing a winning move on move 62. Round 4 saw the 31-year old back to winning ways, with his quick crush over Dmitry Bocharov. The 19 move game in the Catalan saw Bocharov blundering in a difficult position and resigning immediately after, in the face of the loss of a piece at the very least. The fifth round is going on now. Emil Sutovsky has been playing on the top board. The team is placed fifth with 7 match points. Today they play the 3rd seeded St. Petersburg Chess Federation. Apr-14-12    shivasuri4: Sasikiran continued his good form by beating Nikita Vitiugov in a 36 move game of the Queen's Indian. In this exciting game, Vitiugov went astray in complications early in the middlegame and never recovered. The tactical melee ended when Vitiugov went down a rook and bishop, and ran out of checks with his queen. Apr-14-12    shivasuri4: Sasikiran's team( Navigator,Moscow ) lost 2-4 with the 2nd and 3rd boards winning against their higher rated opponents and the other 4 boards losing. They are now placed 7th. In the final round tomorrow, they play the fifth seeded, sixth placed Ugra, Khanty - Mansiysk. Apr-15-12    shivasuri4: In the 7th and final round, Sasikiran with the white pieces drew against Alexei Shirov in 42 moves of the Semi-Slav. The game featured plenty of exchanges and the players agreed to a draw well after the position lost signs of life.
