Apr-11-12 | | shivasuri4: Playing in the Russian Team Championships being held at Sochi, Sasikiran won his game against Igor Kovalenko after his heavy queenside pressure paid off. He played the white side of the Modern Benoni in this 66 move game. The above was in the second round, with Sasikiran being rested in the first round. Of the 6 players fielded by a team in each round, no more than 3 non- Russians can be included. The third round is in progress now. |

Though a pawn up in the endgame, Sasikiran failed to convert it into a win, notably missing a winning move on move 62. Round 4 saw the 31-year old back to winning ways, with his quick crush over Dmitry Bocharov. The 19 move game in the Catalan saw Bocharov blundering in a difficult position and resigning immediately after, in the face of the loss of a piece at the very least. The fifth round is going on now. |

Neither player was in significant danger of losing at any point in this dry game with gradual exchanges. Sasikiran has played all his games so far on board 2 for the 9th seeded Navigator, Moscow. Emil Sutovsky has been playing on the top board. The team is placed fifth with 7 match points. Today they play the 3rd seeded St. Petersburg Chess Federation. |

In this exciting game, Vitiugov went astray in complications early in the middlegame and never recovered. The tactical melee ended when Vitiugov went down a rook and bishop, and ran out of checks with his queen. |

The game featured plenty of exchanges and the players agreed to a draw well after the position lost signs of life. Overall, the tournament represented significant gains for Sasikiran, with him winning and drawing 3 games each. |
