Evgeny Ilgizovich Bareev was World Under-16 Champion in 1982 and since then has been a regular representative of Russia at the highest levels of world chess. He tied for first place in the Soviet Championship of 1990. Subsequent tournament successes include back-to-back victories at Hastings (1990-1991), fourth place at Linares 1994, joint second at Sarajevo 1999, clear first at Wijk aan Zee 2002 and third the following year. He reached the quarterfinals in the FIDE World Championships in 1999 and 2001, and was a semifinalist in the Candidates for the classical world championship at Dortmund 2002. He has previously been ranked as high as fourth (January 2003 and July 1991).

Bareev now lives in Toronto, Canada. In September 2015 he officially changed federations from Russia to Canada, thereby becoming Canada's #1 player and scoring +4-3=3 at the Baku Olympiad (2016).

Dec-29-05  BIDMONFA: Evgeny Bareev

BAREEV
http://www.bidmonfa.com/BAREEV.htm

Feb-06-06  DAL9000: Y'know, back in the day, Bareev seemed to be a big, big fan of this line:

1. d4 ♘f6 2. c4 e6 3. ♘c3 ♗b4 4. ♗g5 c5 5. d5 d6 6. e3 ♗xc3+ 7. bxc3 ♕e7 8. ♘f3 ♘bd7 9. ♘d2

... or at least he played it many, many times in Hastings tourneys in the early '90s. I'm being serious, not flippant, when I say: could someone explain the attraction of White's position to me?

Feb-10-06  hitman84: ♗ BARREV SPEAKS HIS MIND!! ♗
A multimedia interview in CBM 82 by Frederic Friedel
July 2001

i asked vishy that if there were any players out there as witty as him and he answered lot of chess players are funny and likes reading bareev's interviews.

here is one of his interviews!!

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...

Feb-11-06  John Abraham: <hitman84> Thank you. That was a pretty funny interview. That is an appropriate title "Bareev speaks his mind".

:-)

Feb-11-06  hitman84: <John Abraham>actually i thought Bareev was very boring coz he is somewhat a defensive player but the live chat with Vishy opened my eyes where he said that he liked reading Bareev's interviews so i tracked down and found this cool interview :-)

were u there in the chat?

they havent posted the transcript of the interview yet :-(

Feb-11-06  John Abraham: <hitman> No, I wasn't in the chat. Too many people I hear. I wouldn't know what to ask him anyways. I am waiting for the questions/answer transcript to come out. That should be interesting.

Regards,
John

Jul-17-06  square dance: i cant believe bareev lost to a 'shetty' 2269 player. ;-)
Jul-21-06  Mameluk: It is so sad to see Bareev playing like this. In the following years, we will see our heroes going down one after another. I guess Gelfand is the next.
Jul-21-06  DCP23: For what it's worth -- I heard an opinion on a Russian chess forum that Bareev's loss was a strategic maneuver because that way he can win the whole tourney without playing the other top finishers.

Anyway, he is winning all the subsequent games so far. We'll see.

Jul-21-06  DCP23: And just as I said that, he loses today. Oh well. At least he lost to a GM this time.
Nov-04-06  suenteus po 147: Poor Bareev. He is an unpopular player on this site. Whenever I collect a tounrament that he has participated in, his games are always missing, unless they are against Kasparov, Anand, Kramnik, or Topalov. Maybe I'll collect Corus 2002 to showcase him. It has to be, by far, his best tournament performance yet.
Nov-04-06  suenteus po 147: Because no one demanded it! I present Game Collection: Wijk aan Zee Corus 2002 with Bareev as winner! I hope you all enjoy it.
Nov-22-06  Mameluk: Does not surprise me, that Bareev lost in first round in Cuba against Noguieras. Seems that his strength went some 100 elo points down in last year. Should I jump from the window when I get 40?
Dec-24-06  barbababa: What has happened to Bareev, 15 years in top ten or near it and now he is going down fast. He will lose 38 points in January rating list and might be out of top 40. He is only 3 years older than Anand.
Jan-01-07  DutchDunce: Ouch. Yes, I was stunned to see Bareev at #66 today, with a wilted rating of just 2643.

I still think he looks like Davy Jones from the Munkees.

Open Defence: he actually reminded me of the creepy doctor in the remake of Manchurian Candidate.. the one with Denzel..
Jan-01-07  Karpova: Bareev was a complete disappointment in 2006 and his results were not what one would expect from a player of his caliber. He played quite well at the Capablanca Memorial after another catastrophic start. After all, the immense loss of rating points is no surprise but the question remains: What's wrong with him? I doubt he seriously studies chess anymore and he's no Morozevich anyway...
Jan-01-07  barbababa: <...he's no Morozevich anyway...> Interestingly, Bareev has clearly positive results against Morozevich.

Bareev - Morozevich +6 =4 -2

Open Defence: there was a time I thought that maybe he and Ivanchuk would be fighting it out for a World title down the line... hehehee how wrong I was...
Jun-01-07  johnwgoes: Bareev is a good player and a good guy off the board. I think Bareev can beat Leko the Defender.
