HANS NIEMANN
(born Jun-20-2003, 22 years old) United States of America

[what is this?]

Hans Moke Niemann was born in San Francisco, California, moving to the Netherlands at the age of seven for a few years before returning to the US and eventually graduating from Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School, which is known for its chess culture. At the 2015 National Open Niemann, then 11, became the last person to play a rated game against GM Walter Browne, who died shortly after the tournament. Browne won in 35 moves.

After winning his first six games, Niemann finished third at the 2018 U16 Olympiad in Konya, Turkey. In December 2018 he won the National K-12 Blitz Championships with a clean score of 12-0.1436 Three days later he went on to tie for first in his grade in the overall K-12 Grade Championships,37 while also tying for first in the bughouse duo,38 achieving a perfect win.11

On March 1, 2019, Niemann first entered the Top 100 Junior players list on position 88. In June 2019, Niemann won the inaugural ChessKid Games hosted by chess.com, accruing 20 straight victories and qualifying for the 2020 Junior Speed Chess Championship. He achieved his third and final GM norm at the Charlotte Chess Center & Scholastic Academy (CCCSA GM Norm Invitational) in October 2020, placing first. FIDE awarded him the title on January 22, 2021.

In July 2021, Niemann finished first in the World Open after beating John Burke in a tiebreak playoff. He also achieved a FIDE rating over 2600 for the first time. Later that month, Niemann won the U.S. Junior Championship, thereby qualifying for the 2022 U.S. Chess Championship. As of November 2021, his world ranking was ninth among juniors and 124th overall.

Niemann's third-round win against World Champion Magnus Carlsen in the Sinquefield Cup (2022), and its aftermath, sparked worldwide controversy, even in the popular media. The day after the loss, Carlsen withdrew from the tournament, an extraordinary action in a premier round-robin event. Carlsen announced his withdrawal in an enigmatic tweet in which he indicated that he would get in trouble if he said more. This was widely interpreted as an insinuation that Niemann had cheated. Niemann responded with an impassioned interview in which he denied ever having cheated in over-the-board chess, although he admitted having done so several years earlier in online chess. Extensive analysis of Carlsen vs Niemann, 2022, including by anti-cheating expert IM Kenneth Regan, found no evidence that Niemann had cheated. Two weeks later, Carlsen resigned a game against Niemann after just one move. Carlsen later gave an interview in which he stated that he believes that Niemann has cheated more often and more recently than he has admitted.

Chess.com published a report in which it stated that Niemann had likely cheated in over 100 games on its website, including prize-money events. In response, Niemann filed a $100 million defamation lawsuit against Carlsen, chess.com and Hikaru Nakamura. On June 27, 2023, a federal judge dismissed the case. On August 28, 2023, Niemann, Carlsen and chess.com announced they had reached a settlement, whose terms included Niemann being fully reinstated on chess.com and able to participate in their events, Carlsen agreeing to play him when paired, and all parties agreeing not to pursue further legal action.

Niemann won the Tournament of Peace (2023) by three points, scoring 8-1 and achieving a 2946 performance rating.

May-05-25  metatron2: Apparently Niemann waited for a full Month before publicly addressing his withdrawal from Paris, and even after all that time, he still couldn't give even a Hint about the reason, other than claiming that thinking that it was related to the strict anti-cheating measurements there is: "Absolutely Insane" and "Insulting":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-aZ...

I don't know, for me this video along with the fact that Hans had no problems playing in Grenke just a few days after his withdrawal, just make him look worse than before that video..

  MissScarlett: <Hans Niemann @HansMokeNiemann

Now that some of the dust has settled, I want to address my withdrawal from Paris. I didn't immediately issue a public statement because, frankly, I was deeply frustrated by the organizers' and TV2’s absurd speculation suggesting my decision was linked to what they dramatically called "new, advanced anti-cheating measures."

The article falsely claimed that the last message I received referenced "enhanced measures." To be absolutely clear—this is completely false. Unsurprisingly, the usual suspects within the chess mafia eagerly amplified this ridiculous narrative. At the time, I believed publicly responding would only legitimize accusations that have no basis in reality.

I withdrew from the tournament strictly for personal reasons that I prefer not to disclose publicly right now. What’s been particularly disappointing is witnessing how quickly some people jumped on this moment to perpetuate three years of baseless accusations against me. I genuinely wonder when they’ll finally accept reality.

A quick note regarding the polygraph: the initial test was canceled for logistical reasons, but after traveling, I have now arranged to complete it very soon. I am taking this polygraph solely because it was a condition of the match—not because I have anything to prove. Every single official chess organization has repeatedly affirmed that attempts to question my legitimacy as a player are malicious, baseless, and entirely absurd. The only thing left for me to prove is that I can become the World Chess Champion.

Lastly, despite being wrongfully blacklisted by my own country and unfairly excluded from almost every major tournament, my passion and love for chess remain stronger than ever. I deeply regret not being able to compete in Paris and cherish every chance I get to play at the highest level. I look forward to letting my chess speak for itself, and I sincerely hope my relentless detractors can finally leave their misguided hatred behind.

The attitude towards phone use--whether real or perceived--verges on the manic in even my own bit of experience.

While playing in New Jersey this past February, after the first round, I went to speak with two tournament directors, one of whom was Sophia Rohde.

I mentioned having simply forgotten to switch off my phone and the odious Rohde went into a fury. I tried speaking reasonably with her, but she was in a perfect rage, exhibiting even worse behaviour than when I last had the misfortune of crossing paths with her, back in the 1990s.

Sure is great to see that some people never change.

Before all subsequent rounds, an announcement was made regarding phones.

Excerpt from the editorial by Malcolm Pein:

<....A few days later, I was watching the closing stages of the match between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Azeri board one Shakhriyar Mamedyarov had been frustrated in his game and had remained in his chair after it, staring into space as strong players do when they’re trying to figure out what the hell went wrong. At this point an Indian teenager turned up working for the Fair Play team and started trying to manhandle him from his chair and out of the playing hall. I was so outraged I said to the little whippersnapper, “This is one of the strongest players in the world and you will treat him with the respect he deserves. Now clear off!”>

At New Jersey, one was also obliged to leave the playing hall once the game was finished as well. After all, some 2000 player might give assistance to a GM or some such rot!

Seems that maybe it should have been made before all the rounds in the first place?

From Pein's article:

<It remains for the FIDE Council which meets on March the 21st to take further action, which in my opinion should include the dissolution of this disastrous Commission. >

The publication dateline was April, but obviously he wrote it before the Council meeting.

I wonder what was decided.
