Ernst Flechsig was the son of a well-known physician in Bad Elster, Germany. He first went to school in Bad Elster, and later visited the secondary school Thomasgymnasium in Leipzig. He began to study chemistry and natural sciences at the University of Leipzig in 1874. He earned a PhD in chemistry in 1878 in Heidelberg. He worked in Proskau (today Prószków, Poland), and then in Breslau (today Wrocław, Poland) until 1887. After working shortly in Westphalia, he settled in Hirschberg, Thuringia. He fell ill with severe pleurisy (schwere Rippenfellentzündung), forcing him to quit his job and move back to his parents in Bad Elster. He did not recover from his illness and died after a few months.(1)
Flechsig came in 1st at Leipzig (1871), the Haupturnier (1871) of the Central German (Mitteldeutschen) Chess Federation.(1) He shared 2nd place behind Wilfried Paulsen at Düsseldorf (1876).(2) He came in 10th at Leipzig (1877) and shared 9th place at 1st DSB Congress, Leipzig (1879). He succesfully participated in Club tournaments, sharing 1st with Merklein at the summer tournament (1871) of the Augustea Chess Society in Leipzig, and was 1st in the Winter tournament (1880/81) of the Chess Club Anderssen in Breslau.(1) He drew a 10-games match against Fritz Riemann in Breslau, 1885.(3)
Flechsig contributed to the sixth and seventh editions of Paul Rudolf von Bilguer 's Handbuch des Schachspiels.(1) He was also a chess composer.(1)
