  MissScarlett: Bucks Herald, August 3rd 1901, p.2:

<We deeply regret to have to record the death of the Rev. John Coker, in his 80th year. The deceased had been in failing health for some few months past, but nothing serious was noticed till about Tuesday week. A very sudden change then took place, and he was unable to leave the Rectory, and gradually sank till on Tuesday night he passed quietly away. He was a Fellow of New College, Oxford, and gained the degree of B.A. in 1842 and M.A. in 1847. He was ordained Deacon in 1844 and Priest in 1845 by the Bishop of Oxford. He was appointed to the Rectory of Tingewick in 1855, and had therefore held it for 46 years. In his younger days he was an ardent sportsman, both in the saddle and with the gun, and was also a well-known chess player. In the village he was one of the firmest supporters of all its institutions, and was a liberal contributor to the various funds. He was a staunch Conservative, but never obtruded his opinions upon his parishioners, and of late years much of the parochial work has been discharged by the curate, the Rev. W. J. B. Hancock. The deceased leaves a widow, but no children. It need hardly be added that he will be greatly missed, not only in the village of Tingewick, but throughout the surrounding district.>
