[what is this?]
William Lindsay was born in Middlesex, London, as the eldest son of Honorable Colin Lindsay (1819-1892) and Lady Frances Howard (1822-1897). He studied law at Eton, and at Trinity College in Cambridge, where he was president of the Cambridge Union Society (1867) and had the Master of Arts degree (1872). He married Lady Harriet Gordon (1849-1942), daughter of Sir George John James Hamilton-Gordon, 5th Earl of Aberdeen and Mary Baillie, on 7 May 1870. They had two daughters and five sons.

In 1873 he became a barrister, and in the 1870's he was also a member of the St. George's Chess Club in London. As such, he acted as an umpire for Samuel Rosenthal in his match vs Johannes Zukertort (London 1880). He also had an involvement in the organizing of the London (1883) tournament, where he played himself in the minor event London (Vizayanagaram) (1883). Else he played with moderate success in L÷wenthal Cup (London) in 1878, 1879 and 1883.

His law career went better, and in 1897 he was invested as a Queen's Counsel. He authored the book The Royal Household 1837-1897 (London 1898).
