May-06-13  bien pensant: Anand is Carlsen's senior by 21 years. I wonder if this is the largest age gap between world championship contenders and if a player who is older than his opponent by this much had ever won a world crown?

keypusher: Off the top of my head, Botvinnik was 26 years older than Tal when he retook the title in 1961.

Lasker was 32 years younger than Steinitz when he won in 1894. I guess Capa was about 20 years younger than Lasker, Karpov was about 20 years younger than Korchnoi
