(born Apr-10-1879, died Feb-02-1939, 59 years old) Estonia (federation/nationality Germany)

[what is this?]

Bernhard Gregory was born in 1879 in Reval (now Tallinn), Estonia. He moved to Munich in 1898 where he started to study chemistry and then moved to Berlin to where he went on studying. He married Ida Hempel (from Leipzig, 18 years old at that time) on Sep-02 1902 in London. Together they had two daughters (Iselin (born in 1903, died in 2001) and Maud Dolly in 1905. Bernhard and Ilda split up in 1914 and she moved back to Leipzig with their two daughters while Bernhard remained in Berlin (and sometimes visited Reval) where he became a Master. The divorce followed in 1931, Bernhard married for the second time (Helene, born Walsleben, they had no children) and he obtained German citizenship in 1932.

An Englishman: Good Evening: So who is this guy?
May-09-06  Calli: <An Englishman> Bernhard Gregory was born in Estonia but moved to Germany and played most of his chess there. Not sure what happened to him after 1921.

I did submit corrections to <chessgames> but nothing has happened so far. To be clear, "Benhard Gregory" and "Gregory Bernhard" should be combined as Bernhard Gregory.

Jul-22-07  Mibelz: Benhard is not correct name. Actually his name is Bernhard. He and Gregory Bernhard is the same person.
