John Saunders: Philip E Walker won the 1963 WECU (West of England Chess Union) Championship held in Falmouth from 11-15 April. BCM, May 1963, p143, refers to him correctly as "21-year-old Philip Walker of Weston-super-Mare" in the text but there is a typo in the results below, giving his name incorrectly as 'D. E. Walker'. The 1963/64 BCF Yearbook, p82, reporting the same event, refers to him as "Philip Walker, a 21-year-old schoolmaster". He played in the British Championship later the same year, scoring 4/11. The same edition of the yearbook , p84, records his name as "P. E. Walker, Beaconsfield" which I believe to be correct as I recall him being the organiser of junior chess in Buckinghamshire when I started playing competition chess there in 1967/68. I met him just the once, in May 1968 when Bucks Juniors played Berks Juniors, but think he either left the area and/or gave up chess shortly thereafter as I don't remember coming across him again, or seeing reference to further chess activity.

John Saunders: There is a Philip E Walker born in Weston-super-Mare, 3rd quarter of 1941. And I noted an Ernest G Walker marrying Elizabeth P Bevan there in 1940, who must be his father (at birth Philip's mother's maiden name was given as Beavan but that is close enough). This tallies with the 1963/64 grading list which has E. G. Walker (Weston) with a grade of 5b (which roughly equates to Elo 2000). So Philip's father was a decent player too.

John Saunders: Useful links, thank you.

I may be wrong about Walker giving up chess: I found a P.E. Walker playing top board for Wakefield in 1976 against Brian Eley (Doncaster) in a Woodhouse Cup match. <https://mannchess.org.uk/YLeagueArc...>

Tabanus: I've had a little spare time, happy to help!

You can probably add <Gordon> R. Evans to your 1956 first class list (https://www.saund.co.uk/britbase/pg...), see my post at Gordon R Evans.
